  • Partial Front View of the Otesaga - Cooperstown
    Partial Front View of the
    Otesaga

The 95-year old Otesaga, finished in 1909, serves as the anchor for elegance in Cooperstown. Built in the Federal-style, with 30-foot front portico columns, visible at the far right in this shot, the hotel has 139-bedrooms and several meeting rooms.

In addition, the Resort is famous for it's 4-star kitchen which serves quality meals at all times, and I can vouch for that! The Otesaga has just completed a US$40 million facelift of its rooms and facilities, and they are all first-class.

This photo was taken from their parking lot and shows the 'services' wing (kitchen, heating, laundry, etc.) attached to the main part of the hotel.

Our meeting had been set-up here for the Off-season and we used the US$180 American plan (US$212 by the time various taxes are added in) which included all meals. That is a real deal compared to some of the 'normal' hotels that I have stayed in on other business trips - you would pay that price for the room alone!

To maintain a touch of elegance, male dinner guests are required to wear jackets in the Main Dining room.

Otesaga Resort Hotel: Very Comfortable Bedroom
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Judging from the comfort of my room, I would say the $40 million in renovations was well spent.

Everything was very elegant and tastefully done! New wiring had been installed for the phones and high-speed internet access from each room.

It seemed that someone was always slipping into the room to keep an eye on things. One evening when I returned from the Bar after a few drinks with the boys, a hotel dressing gown had been laid out on my bed. Another time, it was a chocolate wafer on my pillow. This could get addictive!

The Otesaga Resort Hotel: An Ornate Lobby
  • Tip Rating:
  • Strangely enough, the Otesaga Resort Hotel owes it's existence to the Singer Sewing Machine company!

It all started in 1851 when Isaac Singer combined several patented ideas (most of which were not his own) to produce the first workable sewing machine. That is when the squabbling began with the other patent owners. Singer hired a respectable patent attorney, Edward Clark, to help him sort the mess out. By 1854 Clark had devised a legal agreement called the Sewing Machine Combine that allowed all of the patent holders to be paid a portion of the profits from any sewing machines sold by any of the members.

This agreement allowed Singer to become a hugely successful business man and Clark himself, by virtue of a 50% share in the company, also made a vast fortune thanks to his association with Singer. During the latter years of his life, Edward Clark retired to the Cooperstown area and used his fortune to buy large tracts of land to preserve the ambiance of this growing summer retreat area.

It was Clark's sons, Ambrose and Edward Severin who decided to build the Otesaga in the early 1900s to provide accommodation for the many summer visitors to the town.

The Otesaga Resort Hotel: From the Lake Side
  • Tip Rating:
  • This rear shot of the brick and limestone Otesaga Hotel shows both it's rooftop cupola, which was added just a few years after the main building was constructed, and its huge balcony.

During the summer months, this is a prime spot for lounging, with it's beautiful view out over Lake Otesago and the 18-hole golf course that runs along it's shoreline from here.

While being served drinks and snacks by the hotel staff, you can also watch the activities on the new Croquet court located on the back lawn!

My room was on the top 'brick' floor at the right side, overlooking the roof of the balcony.

  • Heated Outdoor Swimming Pool - Cooperstown
    Heated Outdoor Swimming Pool

If lounging on the balcony becomes too strenuous, you can always amble down to the Resort's heated outdoor swimming pool.

Located between the hotel and the lake shore, this pool is open between 7 AM and 8 PM but does not have a lifeguard on-duty.

Since it was mid-November, I decided to pass on this one.

  • The bathroom also had that new and solid look, with shiny brass fittings on the various porcelain fixtures.

Just being in the bathroom made you feel like you were living in luxurious style!

Best Western Inn & Suites at the Commons: Superb!    Check Rates

  • Surprised my honey with a trip to Cooperstown. This hotel seemed like the only chain around (which one might look for when in an unfamiliar area).

Stay here! You won't be dissappointed! Unless you forget your swimsuit like me!

I paid $100 more than a regular room to get the Pete Rose suite. It wasn't much more than a separate bedroom and few pieces of Pete Rose memoralbilia. Not really worth the extra cost; but I didn't mind because I wanted to spoil my boyfriend.

The front desk staff was superb. The pool looked spotless and I was mad at myself for forgetting to bring a suit.

Our maid was a young man who was fabulous! Each night we came back to a spotless room! I tipped him well and wrote him a note apologizing for a chocolate cookie smudge on the sheets. He wrote back! So sweet and nice. We wrote back and forth during our stay and I left him cookies which he said thank you for.

    Definitely a wonderful place!
