THE place to dine in Corning. What a Gem!

by MaxDon about Spencer's Restaurant and Mercantile

I recently visited Corning, NY and found a real gem tucked behind a drug store and car wash: Spencer's Restaurant and Mercantile. I visited this site to look for a nice place to eat after my niece's Christening. I initially read the review by "smdc" that seemed downright rude. I rarely put too much stock into reviews because they're sometimes written by people bitter because they had to wait for a table or something else insignificant. Nonetheless I had resigned myself to just asking around when we got into town. What was surprising to me was that after asking 5 (yes 5) different people, including the hotel desk clerk and the waiter at another restaurant at breakfast, they all said Spencer's was the place to go. We went for dinner and only one word can describe it--SPECTACULAR. The menu was just huge! My wife had the fettucine, I had a delmonico, Uncle Sal and Aunt Frida had the Prime Rib, our grandparents enjoyed salmon and crab, and the kids had a rotisserie chicken and a plump burger (no McDonald's product here)! The waitress even offered to warm up a bottle for our niece. The food was exceptional, the service impeccable and the atmosphere cozy. We all agreed it was simply one of the finest meals we had EVER had (and for under $150 for a party of 9 with beer, wine and dessert!!!!!). The fact that the place was packed and we had a short wait for a table only showed us that there is one place for excellent dining in Corning--Spencer's! Because everyone was so impressed with their meals, we ended up eating "family-style", with everyone sharing and nibbling on each other's dinners. Everything was wonderful. The beef was perfectly cooked and flavorful, so that has to be my favorite. I can't wait to come back to Corning!

"Fall In Corning"

During Autumn of 2004, we stayed in Corning while visiting nearby Pennsylvania's Grand Canyon. Located in the Southern Tier region of New York, Corning has a nice medium size town atmosphere. It is also the headquarters of the famous Corning Glass.

Any tips for travelling from Boston to New York via Niagra Falls. Family trip (2x adults + 2x children)would like to spend 2-3 nights doing this loop, more if needed. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Your question is a little ambiguous when you say "from Boston to New York via Niagara Falls". Do you mean to New York City (as opposed to New York State)?
From Boston to Niagara Falls as well as the trip from Niagara Falls to New York City is about 8 hours of straight driving each way, so that's basically 2 days accounted for. One nice place to stop between Niagara and NYC is the town of Corning, NY, the center of the glass works. The prettiest views and most of the activities at the falls are on the Canadian side. And definitely take the time to visit Niagara-On-The-Lake.

Best advice.... take more time... I'm one to do A LOT in a very short amount of time, but I agree with the previous post. All that driving will account for most of your time if you're considering nyc. Also, how old are the kids, because the younger they are the more stops you'll have to make, thus an even longer drive.

i have been on both USA (august 2009) and Canada (frequently) sides of niagara falls. here is my take on the two sides:

NY side: you will have a personal experience of rapids and falls at Goat Island (Niagara Falls State Park, NY) as the American Falls drops from almost adjacent to where you stand. besides there are a number of islands that you can hop on via small bridges while hiking and enjoy rapids closely.

Ontario, Canada side: You stand way above the Horseshoe Falls and the river. you can see the American Falls from that side (front view). the view is majestic and there are many man-made activities / events / programs that you can use to experience the falls upclose. besides, there are many other venues - botanical gardens, butterfly gardens, marineland, zoological garden that you can enjoy.

i agree with VTers above on Corning. that is a must do trip.
