The jewel of upstate New York
New York state is not just New York City. There are a lot of beautiful spot all around the state. Lake Placid is a great place for a weekend retreat or for a camping trip. The town of Lake Placid is very well developed ever since the Winter Olympic Games in 1980. There are several picturesque inns on it's shores and restaurants with great views of the lake. Take a boat tour on the lake and you'll have tons of fun. The tour guides are really entertaining. Besides the Lake Placid itself, there are a lot of places around it you can go to for a side trip. Lake Saranac is 15 minutes away; High Falls Gorge is a lovely spot on the Ausale river too; but the most amazing natural wonder is Ausable Chasm, be sure to bring a lot of film or a high capacity memory card for you camera. On our way back we took a small side trip to see the Ausable Chasm and then saw a sign for Lake Champlain. After driving in the woods for about 10 minutes, all of a sudden we drove in straight on the beach and our jaws dropped. There was no sign of the shore on the other side; it looked huge. My friend thought it was the ocean. So he asked the ferry attendant what it was. It was Lake Champlain.
