Travel Tips for Lake Placid

The jewel of upstate New York

by Boomscat

New York state is not just New York City. There are a lot of beautiful spot all around the state. Lake Placid is a great place for a weekend retreat or for a camping trip. The town of Lake Placid is very well developed ever since the Winter Olympic Games in 1980. There are several picturesque inns on it's shores and restaurants with great views of the lake. Take a boat tour on the lake and you'll have tons of fun. The tour guides are really entertaining. Besides the Lake Placid itself, there are a lot of places around it you can go to for a side trip. Lake Saranac is 15 minutes away; High Falls Gorge is a lovely spot on the Ausale river too; but the most amazing natural wonder is Ausable Chasm, be sure to bring a lot of film or a high capacity memory card for you camera. On our way back we took a small side trip to see the Ausable Chasm and then saw a sign for Lake Champlain. After driving in the woods for about 10 minutes, all of a sudden we drove in straight on the beach and our jaws dropped. There was no sign of the shore on the other side; it looked huge. My friend thought it was the ocean. So he asked the ferry attendant what it was. It was Lake Champlain.

FILM AND LOTS OF IT,THIS IS A VERY SCENIC AND BEAUTIFUL AREA.

Host of the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympic Games

by chrissyalex

Lake Placid was host to both the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympic Games. Some of the facilities from these games are still used today for competitions, events and as training camps. There are several of these facilities located on Main St such as the 1932 Ice rink, 1980 ice rink and the speed skating track.
There is also an Olympic museum you can visit.

Lake Placid - Insurance Required

"Beautiful Panoramas"

Lake Placid area is simply beautiful. It is very easy on the eyes. I went on a ski trip there in Febuary of 2005 and had a blast. It's a gorgeous drive into the area, where the flat lands become hilly, finally becoming mountainous.

The views from the top of Whiteface Mountain are spectacular. On a clear day you can see for miles around.

The nightlife is great and there are enough different bars and restaurants to suit everyone's own tastes.

1980 Winter Olympics

"Lake Placid during the Olympics"

Being at the Olympic games is magical! No matter how cold it is, there is still a warmth and excitement.
In 1980 I was a student at Carleton University in Ottawa, Ontario Canada. Lake Placid was a "mere" 4 - 4 1/2 hr drive away. One of my friends convinced me that we would be crazy to miss the opportunity to go to the games when they were so close.
So, we sent away for tickets, and were able to purchase tickets for the the Pairs Short Program in Figure Skating, and the last training run of the Women's Downhill Skiing.
Please check out my travelogue for more details on the 1980 Winter Olympics at Lake Placid.
