More about Northwoods Inn Of Lake Placid

Cheap and it shows

Although, we booked a king bed overlooking the lake and had confirmed the booking by telephone when we arrived in our room we found that the bed was only a queen size. After calling the front desk we were assured that the room we were in did in fact have a king bed. When one of the employees came to our room to deliver extra pillows we asked him to look at the bed and he admitted that it was a queen. He spoke to the front desk who promptly called us and as the had no available king rooms overlooking the lake the offered us a $10 discount per night. The room was a good size with a separate living room and had recently been renovated. However, we did find alot of mold on the lining of the bedroom curtains, the wallpaper around the tub was peeling and causing a pool of moldy water to settle on the corner of the tub. The carpet was also ripped in places and the room had a funky odor.

On Friday night as we were finishing an enjoyable dinner in the hotel restaurant, the hotel lost power, as did the rest of the town. On returning to our room via the stairs, we found that the emergency lights only worked between the lobby and the 3rd floor, so we had to use our cell phones to guide us the rest of the way. With no electricity we decided to settle in for an early night, but the noise level from the other rooms was horrible. We could clearly hear conversations and then all we heard was the guest in the room above snoring his way through the night!!

On Saturday afternoon we decided to take it easy after a long morning and went to the bar to get some ice and soda for the room...a simple request. When the bar staff realised were taking the soda back to our room he told us there was a store across the street that sold soda!! What a joke.

All in all, I was dubious about staying here after reading the reviews, but saw the replies from the management and decided to give it a try. How sorry am I??

Needs a renovation...but great location

If there is one word to describe the Northwoods Inn I would say it is "tired". We stayed here for one night for $89 US during the Thanksgiving weekend. We hardly spent any time in the room. If I had, my review probably would be worse. Despite this - would I stay there again? Maybe - the price could not be beat and the bed and the bathroom were fine. When we walked in, I was a bit horrified - frayed carpet that looks like it's about 50 years old, a sofa with stains on it and a few holes (really) in the wall. Plaster patches on the ceiling and and wallpaper repaired by simply putting a square on top of a damaged area (and not even trying to match it up). The elevator was rickety enough that we preferred the stairs. For some bizarre reason they used wallpaper in the bathroom and while the tub and shower seems new, they wallpapered around the showerhead - of course this wallpaper is completely unglued. Never seen wallpaper above the shower stall. The room was larger than average and the bathroom was clean. The bed is new and is a tempurpedic mattress and they do have a 27" TV with a ton of channels. Ice - you have to go to the front desk. Our sleep there - surprisingly quiet. Parking free. Location is right in Lake Placid and we had a beautiful Mirror Lake view. Although it was somewhat scary, for the price, the location it was satisfactory. I might even stay here again!

Pleasantly surprised

After reading the reviews on here we were nervous about our stay at the Northwoods. It turned out we had nothing to worry about. My only caution would be to avoid the balcony rooms. We had initially requested a balcony room, but quickly saw that they were old, rusty balconies overlooking the parking lot. We switched to a lake view room and it was very nice. We requested the 5th or 6th floor after reading that those were the renovated rooms and our room didn't disappoint us. Yes, the hotel is old and the carpeting is worn and they could use new baseboards/woodwork- but the room was very clean, comfortable and had a spectacular view. The location right on Main St was great too. It was a good value and we'd definitely stay here again.

Stay Away....

Just returned from Lake Placid for a hockey tournament. This was our 4th time there and 1st time at the Northwoods Inn. My recommendation is stay some place else or don't go! The hotel was described as "worn" to us....its more like shambles. Newspapers stuffed into windows for insulation....duct tape used for weather stripping on doors to outside deck (which looked like it would collapse). Bed spreads that looked like they were from the 1950's, our ceiling was being repaired and still had the patching tape hanging from the ceiling. No hot water! Lack of parking....I could go on and on.....

It's a shame because the hotel is in a great location with a great lobby/bar area. The restaurant had good food too. Will definately go back to LP but NEVER the Northwoods.

Nice place, great price.

We were apprehensive upon arriving after reading the aforementioned reviews, but we had a good experience at the hotel. We could not check-in anytime before 4:00pm, so do not plan on arriving early. However, the staff was friendly, our room was very clean, and the bed was extremely comfortable. Although we had a "lakeview" room...there were also views of Main Street, the buildings, and the tops of buildings (it was still nice though). The kitchenette was great and the cleaning staff was very good. We dined in the hotel's restaurant and although the food was good, it was a bit overpriced and the waiters were a tad slow but very friendly. Lastly, we had the olympic package deal which included passes to Whiteface and Olympic venues (as well as discounts to certain activities) which was really a great deal! Overall, we had a great experience at the hotel and would recommend it for those looking for a reasonably priced hotel with great ski packages. HOWEVER!!! Because employees of the local stores/restaurants were VERY rude, we will not be going back to Lake Placid.

All right for the price

The hotel appears to be going through some renovation, so hopefully they'll pick up some of the issues I had concerns with.

My room was clean but definitely worse for wear. The carpet was worn, and as it had been raining for several hours prior to my arrival, there were puddles of water next to the window that someone had tried to plug with towels.

In addition, the hotel itself was very noisy. Large trucks started driving past at 6am - bad enough, except the hockey players from the night before finished at about 2am; and all were clearly audible from my 4th floor room facing Main Street.

The brand new and extremely comfortable bed obviously had not been planned for the room as it meant that there was about a foot of legroom between the bed and tv cabinet to get to the window on the other side of the room (which had a nice view of Mirror Lake).

Pluses: very good rates when I called the hotel directly (beating anything on any website); a very good restaurant downstairs and an excellent location smack bang in the middle of Main Street (but then the hockey players at 2am at the bar 50m down the street come into play).

Not Terrible, Not Great

This hotel is not as bad as some of the reviews suggest. We stayed for a long weekend for a hockey tournament, and our room was fine. We stayed in a suite on the 6th floor, and it was clean, although the couch did have some stains on it. I was expecting a horrible room after reading some of the other reviews, but we found it to be adequate for our needs. There was actually a lot of closet space and storage. The walls are a bit thin and we could here people in adjacent rooms talking, but nothing out of the ordinary. No problem with the elevators either. It is in a great location for going shopping in the town of Lake Placid.

Centrally located, serves its purpose. Adequate.

We stayed at the Northwoods Inn for a hockey tournament weekend recently. We have stayed there in the past, as well. I would rate this hotel as adequate for the purpose it serves, but it needs some work. If you are expecting a lodge-type hotel that is well-maintained, that is not what you will find. If you are looking for a romantic getaway hotel, do not stay here! Spend a few extra bucks and stay someplace nicer. But if you're in town for a hockey tournament or something like that, this place is fine.

The prices are among the best you will find in the very expensive town of Lake Placid, and the hotel is in an ideal location, right in the middle of Main Street and a short walk to the Olympic Center.

The public areas of the Northwoods Inn are very nice. It has two nice restaurants, as well as a bar with a large wood-burning fireplace. The restaurants have great food and are recommended! You really feel that you are in an Adirondack town when you are in these restaurants and bar. The people behind the front desk are very friendly and helpful.

As I said above, the guest rooms are in need of some work. It does appear they are renovating the hotel. Our room, a king suite on the 5th floor, had not yet been renovated. It consisted of a bedroom area and a separate kitchenette area. The furnishings in the kitchenette area looked like they came from a flea market. The carpeting and the wallpaper in the bathroom were both in serious need of replacement.

The bed itself was one of those very expensive foam mattress beds by Tempurpedic. We found it to be very comfortable and it certainly added a lot to the room to have this nice bed. The blankets and other bedding were new and clean.

The parking situation is bad-- there really isn't enough parking. However, there is another lot just down the street where you can park.

I would stay here again simply because the beds are extremely comfortable, the staff is friendly and helpful, and the hotel is in a perfect location. I'm sure we will stay here again for next year's hockey tournament. Hopefully by then, the rooms will have been updated with new carpet and furnishings.

What a Great Place

by TripAdvisor Member naughty

What a great place to stay, the hotel is right on main st. lake placid within walking to everything in town I had read the reviews before i booked but what a difference, some people must just like to complain, the hotel is surly in need of an upgrade but i could that real efforts are being made to do this We stayed in a wonderful room overlooking the lake and had some of our best meals and service right in the hotels rwo restaurants. This is a hotel i will surely return to as it will only improve as time goes on.

NORTHWOODS DELIVERS NOTHING THEY PROMISE!

by TripAdvisor Member Sk8rsMom

This hotel has definite parking issues-sending me to far away lots that had no parking anyway... then suggested I go to a municipal lot and pay for parking. More upsetting than the parking issue itself was the arrogant way the staff handled themselves. "What do you want me to do? Go move someones car?" "I'll refund you money if you don't like it." he also said knowing very well the weekend of Empire State Games is sold out for the most part. When I asked for a manager my option became, as the desk staff explained, to "take it or leave". Ice will take about 1/2 hour to get if the desk person is outside smoking. The beautiful view... if you consider looking at the top floor of another building a view you're in luck. Holes in the carpet... wallpaper peeling off the walls... floor boards missing... no hot water in February! Under construction is one thing but you can't expect people to stay in these conditions. If this were my first trip to Lake Placid it would be my last without doubt. The attitude of this hotel made me feel that Lake Placid is a struggling community that depends on tourists like me but also knows that when the town puts on an event, like Empire State Games, they can treat those who come to that event without respect or care and there is nothing we can do about it. The Normally priced $60.00 room is $130.00 during this weekend so it is appalling that I should also be treated this way or have to tolerate these conditions. Save yourselves! Do not go to Northwoods. And Management, please don't respond; I asked to talk to you when I was there and you refused.
