Napeague is a spit of land connecting Montauk to the Amagansett and the rest of the Hamptons. Along the south shore on the ocean, Sea Crest is one of five condominium complexes where each unit is privately owned and the facility is run by a management company which rents out the units on behalf of the owners. Because they are private units, decoration and upgrading is at the pleasure of the owners although competition keeps most in pretty good shape. In peak season, one night rates are $400-800 per night. Some, like the adjacent Hermitage, are well maintained, upgraded and updated. SeaCrest is at the bottom of the pile with prime weekend nights at $500. Windward Shores is also very nice. One - three bedroom units all contain fully equipped kitchens, TV, barbecues with charcoal provided, and air-conditioning. Ready beach access through the dunes is the great attraction. An unshaded rectangular pool, tennis courts in dubious repair, and free parking round out the offerings. As this is not a hotel, the staff is generally of no assistance, although the daily maid service is excellent. As the images indicate, the beach is beautiful and rarely crowded even on a summer weekend. They also illustrate the generally sad size and ancient status of the provided bathrooms and furniture.
The Montauk - Napeague beach is world famous. Facing the Atlantic Ocean with a direct southerly exposure, the beach is wide, clean, and well-maintained. All beaches in this area are public, but access for non-guests is difficult at best and crowding is never a problem on the Napeague beach. SeaCrest is undoubtedly the worst maintained and least updated of the beachfront condominiums. The furniture tends to be old, the appliances older, and the mold and rust more in evidence than at the other facilities. Nonetheless, on our weekend it was totally occupied. When we reserved 3 months earlier, it was the only one with availability despite being the cheapest. The place is pretty much a dump, but the beach is the same for everyone. Besides, this is the fabled Hamptons which we love. And that is the best summary.
