Hamptons Resort
by HotelSnob
I would like to visit the Hamptons this summer and looking for a a nice, romantic, luxury hotel or resort to stay at. Any recommendations.

I don't know which town you are interested in and more importantly in the summer what you can spend. Out in Montauk at the end of the south fork the 2 most expensive and luxurious are, in my preference, the Montauk Yacht Club and Gurney's Inn. These are very upscale in cost and services. Gurney's is currently pushing its spa offerings. If you are not interested in going all the way out to Montauk (which is not that far to drive to Amagansett, Sag Harbor, and Easthampton, but quite a way from the rest) I can dig up some more for you. Our favorite village is Sag Harbor but most of the resorts are not in that village.

no matter where you stay except South and West Hampton I can recommend the best local restaurants since we are out there frequently, last 2 weeks ago.
Travel Tips for Montauk
Beach parties
by Srechko
Beach parties definitely. At a matter of fact - they were quite a shock. Our favourite beach was located close to a place called Hampton Bays.
There were two beach bars there and a beach and that's all the reason we needed to stay there three days. We would leave the beach in the evening and go out to Hampton Bays. Town has a few interesting bars and clubs where most patrons are tourists looking for a good time. Well what happens at those beaches...Here is a usual scenario - around 11 am people start gathering at the beach doing normal activities, chatting, playing volleyball, laying in the sun. Everything looks normal. Then around 1pm, over the speakers everyone is called to come to the bar, because you don't want to miss beer specials. Every day diffent beer company is the sponsor and they sell their beers for $2 only and give t-shirts, lighters and other stuff away. Around 3pm bar games start. At that time bar and the beach are already full of people and nobody is sober. Games are various, but they all have one idea - drink more beer. Around 5pm everyone is drunk and the rest of story would be X-rated so I will let your imagination work from here...
erosion
by chodearm
The cliffs look like a snaggle tooth grin, or displace you to Bryce Canyons NP Hoo Doo's. Erosion is literally eating up the Island. People try to climb these cliffs and aid in speeding erosion. Yo, stay off the cliffs. Rain run-off carves these many structures which look oh-so delicate. Just stand back and glare, no need to touch. How about this, if you touch I remove your hands by sand papering them away on the barnacle ridden rocks. Then I take my chlorine filled canteen and douse you nubs. Idiot, jerk, weiner head.
Usually Just A Day Trip
by cjg1
We normally spend just a day at Montauk and are on to our next destination so just a backpack for me. Comfortable shoes if you plan on doing any hiking. Flip flops or water shoes for the beach. Bathsuits for a dip in the ocean. Shorts and lightweight clothing for the summer weather. Sun Block My digital camera and video camera towels, umbrella, beach chairs

I guess putting these up here has some uselessness to it. No one can go here un-invited, but the beach here is much like those that people will be granted access to if you go to one of the many state parks in the Montauk vicinity. Just west is Ditch Plains which is a nationally celebrated surf spot and to the east stands the iconic lighthouse, bearing the positioning of THE END of Long Island. If you want desolation the requirement is walking. To get to spots with nothing but nature, head in either direction away from the beached humans. Most just stay put, work for solitude.
Beautiful Beaches of Montauk
by cjg1
Montauk is on the South Shore of Long Island and is a big tourist destination in the summer months. People flock to Long Island in general for the beaches and to escape the city heat. Montauk is a bit of a hike but worth it for the Lighthouse out at the point and the peaceful quiet by the water. We prefer to visit Montauk during the Fall, Spring or late Summer when there are less crowds.
