More about A Greenwich Village Habitue
Perfect place for country people in the city
I hesitate to write a review of this fabulous place for fear that there won't be room for us to stay there in the future. After years of staying in midtown hotels and searching the streets for good restaurants, we found Greenwich Village Habitue. We'll never stay anywhere else again. When we got out of our cab at the house, a passerby welcomed us to the neighborhood. The apartment is immaculate and perfectly decorated and welcoming. Matthew and Kevin are warm and gracious hosts. The neighborhood is quiet and really fun to explore. We found our home away from home here at Greenwich village Habitue.
Great for the anti-tourist
This is a fantastic place for anyone who loves New York but hates the bland tourist hotels of Midtown. Its clean, comfortable, Kevin & Matt are excellent hosts and the area is perfect for living like a local. There's every restaurant, bar, cafe, gallery, fashion boutique and grocery shop you could wish for within walking distance and if you don't want to go out, you can just lounge on your very own sofa at home flicking through all the info they leave in the room just incase you want some eating/shopping/walking/clubbing advice. I have left my own guide, Dorling Kindersley's excellent 'e-guide to New York' in the room to help you with your stay and heartily recommend you give this place a try.
New York's Finest!
We stayed here for 5 wonderful days in Sept 05 and all the good stuff we'd read from previous Tripadvisors turned out to be spot on! With a building as nice as this, the owners could probably afford to be a bit complacent but Kevin & Matt really care about the little details that make a vacation special. Dont bother taking a guide book, the drawers in your room are stuffed with great articles and handy maps that K&M have collected for you. The location is superb...take your pick from the old world charm of the west village or the nouveau chic of the Meatpacking District. The riverside park two short blocks away makes for a lovely summer evening stroll. I just pray that they have a spare room for our next trip to NYC!
A Great New York Experience!
Imagine that you live in a trendy neighborhood in New York City, with some of the city's best restaurants and night-spots just a few blocks away. Imagine that co-op management are two great guys who give you wonderful insight on the neighborhood, and who are just a pleasure to chat with. Imagine your apartment is a spacious retreat, as well-appointed as it is quiet and comfortable.
Though I was a visitor for just the week, my memorable stay at the Greenwich Village Habitué has left me with these recollections, and the thought that I can't wait to get back to there to enjoy the experience again! You feel as if you are living in New York, in an apartment that is wonderfully renovated and furnished, with separate bedroom, dining and living areas. In the kitchen, Matt and Kevin have provided the conveniences to make oneself a light breakfast, though personally I would recommend exploring and trying a different neighborhood cafe each morning.
One can breakfast at many comfortable cafes and coffee shops in the area, including Pastis. There is a great newstand that also sells foreign papers just around the corner, where La Republicca can be found every morning. For dinner, there are a host of Italian, French and Spanish restaurants a short walk from Greenwich Village Habitué. For a nighcap, choose between the panoramic rooftop lounge of the Hotel Gansevoort, or the raucous Hogs & Heifers.
Thanks, Matt and Kevin, for being such great hosts, and creating such a great New York experience!
What a disappointment!
We looked at the website, we read all of the reviews on Tripadvisor and thought that we had found a real gem. How wrong we were.
This is an old building that has been divided up into four long term rents and four short term rents. The photographs on their website suggest a smart, elegant apartment. In fact they are a triumph of the photographer’s ability to gloss over the reality of the situation.
Downstairs is a dark entrance hall that reeked of mothballs and an unidentified musty smell. Climbing the dingy staircase we wondered if we had made a big mistake and on opening the door we realised that we had. We expected a sophisticated room and found a seedy one. The bathroom could only be described as “small” or even “compact” with cracked tiles and mould on the shower curtain. A noisy, rickety air conditioning unit that had been stuck in the window added to the “atmosphere” yet failed to clear the musty smell from the room. The whole place was reminiscent of student accommodation rather than that which the website suggested.
The hosts, Matt and Kevin, were indeed friendly and they did provide lots of information and books for the traveller. It’s just that the apartment was so awful. It beggars belief that it is listed as one of the top places to stay in New York.
Feel at home in NYC
I don't like high rise hotels so wanted to stay somewhere small and friendly and this is what we got at GVHabitue. The apartments are spacious and comfortable, and perfect for the traveller who wants independence and to feel like a local.
Matt & Kevin are perfect hosts, providing lots of information, always there if you have a problem. and keep the accommodation immaculate. Security is great and the apartments are ideally placed for loads of great bars, shops and restaurants.
This accommodation is part of what made our trip so enjoyable and we have been recommending it to all our friends. We stayed for 8 nights and would definitely stay here again on our next trip. Thankyou Matt & Kevin.
Excellent choice for us
We stay in B&Bs whenever possible and consider ourselves lucky to have found this. It is thoughtfully decorated, comfortable, immaculately clean and well supplied. You can really feel like a resident New Yorker staying here. We certainly hope to go back, often.
Comforts of home!!
We had the pleasure of staying here recently and have already reserved our next stay. We love the feeling of
staying as a guest in someone's home. The apartment was tastefully furnished, exceptionally clean and our hosts were a delight! Nothing like staying in a "neighborhood" to experience the true nature of a city.
So helpful & friendly
On our first trip to New York, we decided on the GVH on the strength of the reviews. We stayed in Apartment 4, which is just as the pictures on their Web site show. Couldn't fault it, very clean and well decorated. The hosts Matt & Kevin proved to be very helpful & welcoming, giving local knowledge (which may not be normally offered when staying in larger hotels) this saved hours of ploughing through guide books etc, etc. In quiet area, with easy access to all attractions as only short walk from subway.
Would definitely recommend staying here.
perfect accomodations and location
as stated by the other trip advisor members, Matt and Kevin are great! they provide you with all the information you need to know. the location is perfect. it's on a quiet street away from all the noise and madness, but is within walking distance to many small and intimate restaurants and different shopping locations (magnolia bakery, & marc jacobs are nearby).
i'll be staying hear again on my next trip to ny.
