Cheap and Convenient
We stayed here for several nights. We found cheap, central accommodation hard to get and ended up here.
The room is small and not that clean although the shared bathroom was ok. The walls were grubby and we soon put thongs on instead of walking in bare feet. The sheets were very very old, but we think they were clean. We were on the street side and it was fairly noisy.
The rooms are heated, which is good. They provide a sort of breakfast, the coffee was good and they have a common room where other guests were pretty chatty and friendly. The internet is one computer and it's US$6/hr. Ouch! There is an internet cafe in the laundromat on the corner.
The place is in 55th street and very well located to Broadway and mid-town and not too far from Central Park and 5th Avenue. This was all pretty positive and it was cheap, for New York.
The staff at reception were efficient but no friendlier than they had to be - seemed a bit surprised if you said hello, or spoke to them on any matter other than the business of getting into the room and dealing with related matters.
Getting up the narrow steep stairs with luggage or a large backpack requires care.
Unique Quality: The location is pretty central and it's basic but the price is pretty hard to beat and it's definitely not a 'dive'. Just keep your expectations realistic.
