Budget ideas for the Big Apple

WOW! I experienced some real sticker shock while looking for a hotel in mid December which is probably the busiest time to visit New York City. I thought I could use Priceline but a check on www.biddingfortravel.com showed no one getting rooms for mid December, the moderator thinks that no inventory goes to Priceline during this time of year. I checked Hotwire, $300+ for a 2 star hotel. The I tried the conventional search engines such as Travelocity, Expedia, Orbitz, quikbook.com and hotels.com and was finding weekend rates from $300+ per night. Yikes!

So I did a little searching to see what other kind of alternatives there were for some lower cost budget places. I can't vouch for any of these since I never stayed at any of them but at least it's a place to start, some may have shared baths, no TV or phone
