First Visit to NY and USA

Hi
Will be spending 3 nights in NY at the end of a cruise in May. Which area of the city should I find a hotel in? We love food, theatre, shopping as well as visiting the tourist sites. Any tips on which hotels to try would be helpful. Have reasonable budget but it doesn't look as if hotel rooms are cheap in NY. Also which clothes shops are good for men in their fifties? Still try to dress with some style! Thanks

Manhatten would be ideal for accommodation regarding seeing the tourist sights of NY.
I recommend the Hotel Metro- which is right next to Empire State Building. Its a perfect location, with a subway nearby. Hotel has excellent service, nice rooms and good food. (there is a review on my New York page. Click on my name for my homepage, where there is a New York link, and scroll down page for accommodation tip). The rates are reasonable for Manhatten.
Shops- just about everywhere - stroll around and take your pick! NY is fantastic just for walking around too.

Good location would be around Times Square and Broadway which is where you will find all the theatres and a lot of restaurants. Also easy to get on the subway to other attractions. Try booking.com for best rates, and with a lot of them you don't have to pay until you actually check in. Have fun!

Any location near the subway is good as it is very cheap and easy to move around. We had a week down on 23rd street and walked to Times Square in 20 minutes. Walking lets you see much.

If you are really interested in theater and you don't mind seeing whatever is available, you can get half price tickets at tkts at Times Square day-of. However, if you would like to see a particular show, check out theatermania.com. I just bought tickets to The Addams Family (I'm a big Nathan Lane fan) for about 40% off the regular price for great orchestra seats through this site.
Also, besides the regular museums and tourist sites like the MOMA, the Met, the Natural History Museum, the Statue of Liberty, the Top of the Rock, or the Empire State Building, you may want to take a trip off the beaten track and tour City Hall (one of the oldest in the country), Gracie Mansion, or sit in the audience at one of the numerous shows that tape in NYC (e.g., The View, Regis and Kelly, Letterman, Nate Berkus, Martha Stewart, etc.). Crossing the Roads of New York!

In New York City I found that crossing the roads was quite strange, because often, when the sign said "Walk" there would still be cars going straight across, almost hitting me! You can't quite see it in the photo, but the sign says "walk" and yet that car is pulling straight out into the road.
I don't know, maybe I'm too used to stricter British roads, but it's something to watch out for if you visit New York!

Definently you must go to a broadway play We went to a broadway play and we pulled up there in a limo. I had so much fun there. We were originally supposed to get to the play by a cab but a limo driver heard us talking and asked to take us there.

Soho

This district SOuth of HOuston Street (hence the name: SOHO) is a former sweatshop area that was nearly abandoned when industries moved away from New York city (taxes and labor laws!) between the 60s and 70s. Groups of artists started to move in and create their own lofts and workspaces. By the end of the 1980s, Soho had become the artistic capital of New York city.
Some of the greatest shopping in New York can be done here, especially since many big name boutiques have joined the authentic indigenous stores.
West Broadway is more or less Soho's main street: it is absolutely charming, especially on weekends.

Q: Private Car Pick Up JFK to Manhatten Hotel "Hi..soon to be in NYC, there are 3 of us - so 3 suitcases and 3 pieces of hand luggage. Not sure if Cabs are keen on that..."
A: "JFK to Manhattan is regulated for Cabs on price. 3 cases (plus) are about what my wife and daughter carry and they've had no issues. Most NYC cabs can handle a lot more..."
