From Penn Station to Union Station DC is 3 hours by Express and on the Regional about a 3-4 hour trip.
The Capitol building and the Library of Congress are within walking distance, but the White House is close to 3 miles away.

one of the easiest to get into Washington DC. When you come out the station, you can see the Capitol in front of it. If just taking the day there, I take the Grayline tour or a hop on and off bus. The streets are long blocks and the value for the money is going to all these places in a day, It might be cherry blossom time also and when spring is in the air in DC, everyone gets out. The White House is 10 long blocks...it is walkable, but to the sightseeing trolley, bus or whatever. In fact, go to the capitol and look down the mall to washington monument. in between is the White House on the right. walk down the middle of the mall and you will see how far the walk is,

If you didn't make plans yet, you may want to stay overnight in the nations capital,,, there is so much to see and at night the streets lights up. Besides the rooms are much cheaper than NYC and most sites are free. They also have the great National Zoo there

Just a note here that if you have interest in touring the White House, you need to contact your embassy in Washington to submit a tour request.

One can also use the Bolt Bus for a fraction of the cost of an AMTRAC train.

Hi I am also thinking about doing this with my family (2kids 9 +10) but I am worried that 3 hrs there 3 hrs back might ruin the next few days in NY. I would love for you to let us know (after April) how it went.
Thanx heaps

If you decide that any of those distances in Washington DC are too far to walk, keep in mind that Union Station also has a station served by the Washington Metro

I have no idea where the several NY to DC buses end up in DC, but they probably get close to one of the Metro stations as well.
Travel Tips for New York City
metro pass and scam in time square
by sledge8986
you can get a metro pass for 7-14 days unlimited use on buses and subway you get it from machines in the subway the only place it is no good is the air train too and from the airport that cost $5.00 but you can get the subway to the air train by useing the card we just left new york the other day it is a great pass we used it so much we were there for 10 days. be carefull of anybody offering free cd's in time square they come up to you saying they are just getting there music out for people to hear and they are from the bronx when they get the cd in your hand there is another 2 up to 5 others pushed cd in your hand they all tell the same type of story then they sign the cover asking your name and then they ask for a donation whatever your want to give but whatever you give one the others then start asking for there money
Finding a Memorable Hotel in Manhattan
by Kris07079
I used to just crash any old place when I traveled--friend's couches, hostels, the cheapest hotel I could find--but as I get older I've learned to appreciate the good things in life. I think the foundation of a great trip is finding a great hotel. A place where you will feel rested and rejuvenated for your adventures and, in the right circumstances, a hotel can even be part of the adventure. I discovered a well-kept secret by frequent business travelers--a hotel booking service that has only unique boutiques in New York. No more faceless, cookie-cutter chains! Go to www.Quikbook.com for a great hotel. And here's a bonus tip, try using this promotion code I got--enter "AMMI" when you make a reservation and you'll get a free $15 Amazon gift card.
New York City Tip

My favorite memory of New York is from 1987 when I went there with my parents over Christmas break. We went to see the La Boehme at the Metropolitan Opera on New Year's Eve. It was a beautiful performance with a stunning set. After the opera, we went out to Times Square and watched the ball descend. It was incredibly cold, and just as the clock struck midnight, tiny, shimmering snowflakes appeared, decorating the sky like tinsel.

Visit the American Museum of Natural History. The Natural History Museum is a major tourist attraction in New York City. There are altogether 42 permanent exhibits covering various disciplines of sciences, from biology, ecology, zoology, geology, astronomy to anthropology. The Hall of Dinosaurs is a big hit with the kids.
Thee Christmas tree/ice skating
by merimichelle
Too cold for me to ice skate but didn't mind watching the goofballs having fun freezing their rear ends off! The Christmas tree is gorgeous pics don't do it justice! Oh one cool thing is you can get your picture taken for free by NBC in front of the tree then you can look it up on a website they give you and order it only if you want to. You can even order Christmas cards with the tree you, and or, your family. It also saves you from getting yelled at for standing on the walls trying to get a decent pic of the tree! ( I did get pics done by NBC and wow they turned out incredible...sent them to mom as a Christmas gift)
