I stayed in The American Dream Hostel on 23rd Street between 3rd Avenue and Lexington last year. It was clean and the staff were all nice enough. It was very basic though...I liked it because it was within stumbling distance of many good Irish bars! Poolbeg Street Pub is literally just around the corner and open til 4am.

My husband and I, age 50ish, just recently stayed at The American Dream Hostel, dates 10/13 thru 10/16/2005 and had a blast. It was conveniently located, very clean, safe, great price. Great morning breakfast, TV in room. Get some ear plugs to block out street traffic. We met so many interesting people while eating breakfast. Much to my surprise there was a wide age span. The staff was warm, friendly and helpful. Just loved this place, and I would stay there again. I hope you have as nice a time as we did. There was internet access, too. Twice we used the common frig to stock a great, hearty and quick breakfast. It is not fancy but clean and safe.

Looking for cheap hotel/ or weekly rental?

by rpertaub25

Hi,
My sister is making a trip for 1-2 weeks in NYC and since i am in the states i need to find her cheap lodging. i know how expensive it is in new york, so i was hoping to either find a REALLY cheap hotel, or, to maybe find an apartment that rents by the week, for cheaper. Do you guys know of anything like that??
Thanks
radha

Really cheap in NYC usually means some place to avoid.

Perhaps one of these will offer a weekly rate:

All good suggestions so far. What about a youth hostel? Look up American Dream Hostel and Big Apple Hostel. Also consider the Y.

Hi Radha,
I have just booked for the second time now with colbyinternational.com they have really clean and pleasant apartments from studio to 2 bdroom, they also do B and B. They're apartments start from $120 per night .
Hope this helps, I know that I always like to try to live like a New Yorker while I'm there.

Hello
I stayed at the portlandsquare hotel before in a single room. The room was really really small ( which is common in NYC), but the bathroom was pretty big, go figure! because it is in midtown near times square, its a little noisey with the sirens and all of that and its a small hotel, but i found it to be clean and comfortable....you may wan to to try it out!
