Outsider art galleries
by Woody13
I'm an amateur artist and while visiting next seek would like to see several galleries or sttreets of galleries for inspiration (and humiliation). I like recycled/outsider, art brut type of stuff.

Hi Woody -
Maybe the best thing is to take a look at what NYC has to offer, and pick your genre from that. You will have the best idea what appeals to you! :)
Just to get you started:
Here's a nice link to what going on in the art world in NYC at any given time - and you can search by some approximate genres:
http://nymag.com/arts/art/
There appears to be a ton of galleries on West 24th in Chelsea - you might give some of those a look:
http://oneartworld.com/24th/
And lastly, I don't know if you're into tours but here's one for "innovative" works:

Sorry I couldn't steer you to any specific gallery but hope this helps for starters!

This may not be what you are looking for, but the American Folk Art Museum is excellent: http://www.folkartmuseum.org/

Also, I think the real outside stuff has moved to Brooklyn, Manhattan got too expensive and upscale - i am sure that if you google you can find info - There are surely weeklies that deal with that too, that you can buy at a newsstand - The East Village used to be the place, but it went yuppie somewhat; however I am sure that strolling around the area is still fun...

Thanks Goodfish, I'll try those links, they look like a promising place to start.
Good suggestion, Travelmad, it's right next to where I'll be staying.
Thanks Jean, I'll search Brooklyn galleries as well. I hope I can gain enough confidence in my negotiating public transportation to get around over there.

If you Google "outsider art Manhattan" you will get a number of responses. The Andrew Edlin Gallery is one that specializes in outsider art, although for sure it is at the high end, price-wise!
Get a good map for Brooklyn and you will be fine. (Queens is much more confusing!) Public transit in NY is actually not that daunting if you take care to look at the MTA maps. You'll be fine.

There was a time when the Williamsburgh area of Brooklyn was the new mecca for artists, of course that might have changed alread! As soon as artists create a cool scene the real estate vultures move in and the artists have to move on - well good luck and let us know, it is interesting...

Thanks Jean and Travelmad. I've discovered I will be there for a 2nd Friday open gallery event in Williamsburg, so I'll venture over.

Travel Tips for New York City
Books by authors from NYC or playing in NYC
by PALLINA
The list could be very long but I am quoting just my favourites:
Breakfast at Tiffany - Truman Capote (no need to be introduced)
The Chosen - Chaim Potok (Potok is not so easy to be read, but really interesting)
My name is Asher Lev - Chaim Potok
New Yorkers - Cathleen Shine (quite easy and funny about dogs and their owners in the Upper West Side)
Autie Mame - Patrick Dennis (the childhood of an orphan living by his eccentric Aunt)
What I loved - Siri Hustvedt (despite of the title, it's very far to be a romantic novel for bored ladies. It's a masterpice by Paul Auster's wife)
Sunset on the Statue of Liberty
by Dutchnatasja
If you have the change, than try to see the Statue of Liberty during the sunset. You can make beautiful pictures. We've visit Ellis Island and the statue of Liberty. I did like it, not the waiting line to go with the boat, but if you past that, then it only gut’s better. Fantastic view over the skyline. You must to this!
Take in a Broadway show
by seagoingJLW
Take in a Broadway show-- off Broadway is also great. Don't miss the Metropolitan Opera. Go to the Ballet. There are several good companies that perform at Lincoln Center. Visit the library at Lincoln Center for an unusual experience in finding scores.
In Brooklyn, the Brooklyn Academy of Music has wonderful productions that are worth seeing. Many actors like Diana Rigg prefer to work there because the shows run for a limited time. I really miss the shows, the opera, the ballet, the concerts. I was a member of the Lincoln Center Institute when I lived and worked in NYC. The photo shows Lincoln Center.
Walk as much as possible. ...
by davhel
Walk as much as possible. Don't be afraid to turn down side streets, especially in Greenwich Village and the Lower East Side/Chinatown. Learn the grid for Mid-Manhattan -- avenues take you up (North) and down (South) Manhattan; streets East to West. The higher the number of the street the further uptown you are. The higher the number of the avenue, the further West you are. Broadway cut a diagonal across the island.
Across the East River at least once in your trip. Don't be afraid to ride the subways.
Great Website, things to do in New York
by astro_kerryn
This is a great website that gives you pretty much every tourist option you would like in NYC! You can choose from heaps of catagories and it also give transport and accomodation info. Worth checking out.
You can also make up your own itinerary and it will be stored for 30 days, so you can build up your trip before you go.
