We liked Hilton. It is not our utmost favorite hotel, but as far as chain hotel goes, it stays pretty close to the top of our preferred list. All Hilton hotels are pretty much the same, meaning they are not very charming, but they are courteous, effective, and they don't often make mistakes. This includes Hilton New York. The last time we stayed at Hilton New York was during a Thanksgiving weekend. The weather was miserable, the city was crowded, and all hotels were filled to the brim. There were several Thanksgiving Parade participating groups that stayed at Hilton, many of them were young people and none of them was easy to deal with. Because of the bad weather, storage rooms were required to store extra gears for the groups. Because of the bad weather, changing rooms needed to stay open all day instead of an hour before and an hour after the parade. Because of the bad weather, hotel personnel had to be ready to take care of the minutest order from individual guests as well as parade participants. In addition, the convention of scientists who stayed there also had many last minute changes. Over the great confusion, the staffs were calm, cool, and collected. They might not be as pleasant as they could under normal circumstance, but they saw to it that everyone's need was taken care of. Maybe it's the New Yorkers trait or maybe just in the Hilton training, the staffs dealt with every crisis with aplomb. That's why we liked Hilton, especially Hilton New York. | | | | Warwick New York: Midtown Convenience Compare Rates NEW! | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
The Warwick Hotel is situated in an extremely convenient midtown Manhattan location and I highly recommend it for first-time travellers to New York. It is located a short walking distance from a few subway lines, and is near many restaurants and prime Fifth Avenue Shopping. The Warwick is also registered as an historic hotel -- Carey Grant lived in the 27th floor suite for many years, and as the 2nd floor lounge photo gallery attests, the Warwick had Audrey Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor, and Marion Davies as regular guests. In fact, the hotel was originally built by William Randolph Hearst as an apartment complex for his many friends who would visit New York City, and as a renedevous for his mistress, Marion Davies. The staff were pleasant and helpful and very professional, though the doormen could pay more attention to their job -- the revolving door, though adding character to the hotel is small and difficult to negotiate, and I noticed many times the doorman ignoring people or talking to friends while people struggled through the door and down a few steps with their luggage; there is no ramp for suitcases.
Overall, the hotel is a clean, quaint, and very pleasant place to stay, and though decorated in an elegant, classy, style, is a little worn about the edges. The hallways are quite elegant, but the carpet is worn and dirty in spots, and our bathroom door had big chips taken out of the bottom; the sheers and blackout curtains in our room were fairly grimy. The room itself was fairly spacious and clean at approx 400 sq. feet, and furnished with slightly chipped antique furniture or reproductions, I'm not sure which. They also had a selection of high-end new magazines for reading as well. The beds are new, firm, and have high-quality linens, and also comfy down comforters. Keeping in mind that this is a historic hotel, the bathrooms are small, about 6 ' by 7' in my estimation, but very clean and recently renovated with vintage chrome fixtures and marble. The elevators are also vintage, so only fit 6 people max, or 4 people with luggage. So, during peak times, it can be difficult to get a spot on an elevator. Though I highly recommend this hotel, do not stay here unless you get a deal, like we did through Expedia. Ordinarily, the basic rooms are $450 US a night, and unless they do a little additional maintenance, I would be quite displeased to pay that much per night. | | | | Choosing a Neighborhood | Tip Rating: | | | | |
Lots of people look for a hotel "near all the tourist attractions." But, NY's attractions are not in one place. So choose a neighborhood based on how easy access to public transport is, and by the "vibe" of the area. I try to steer visitors away from the Times Square / Theater District ("tourist central") because it's not a "real" neighborhood and you'll never meet New Yorkers there. The exception is if you're planning to see lots of Broadway shows, it might be easier to stay in the Times Square area, so you can easily walk back to your hotel after theater, when it's nearly impossible to get a taxi. My favorite neighborhood is the Upper West Side, a large, upscale residential neighborhood known for its great shops and restaurants. It's close to Central Park, Lincoln Center, the American Museum of Natural History, Riverside Park. And public transport access is terrific. From 72nd & Broadway, it's one express stop to Times Square, or 10 minutes away. Some of the Upper West Side hotels you might consider are the Beacon, On the Ave, Lucerne, Excelsior, Belleclaire, Milburn, Newton. Don't stay in the neighborhood without visiting Zabar's & Fairway. You might even run into your favorite celebrity waiting for your number to be called at the appetizing counter! You'll find lots of first-hand reviews of hotels on this wonderful site, and also on www.tripadvisor.com. As a New Yorker, I can comment on the location of a hotel, but not what the rooms or amenities are like. There are a zillion hotels in the Times Square area! I hear terrific things about the two budget hotels the Belvedere and the Novotel. I think the Paramount is very chic, but apparently Ian Schrager's hotels are notorious for having the smallest rooms, even in a city known for small hotel rooms! And, I think the Marriott Marquis is way too big and there's always a wait for elevators at peak times. For business, we often put people in the W Times Square (which everyone loves) or the Crowne Plaza. The new Westin Times Square is terrific too. | | | | The Muse Hotel: THE place for doing Broadway shows.... | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
The Muse Hotel was recommended to me by a business associate. A reserved and tasteful hotel in the heart of NYC's theater district, the Muse offers a personable, efficient and not-overly-visible staff and management, coupled with very large, comfortable and well-appointed rooms. This stay was in conjunction with our 24th wedding anniversary. The staff knew this, and went to extra lengths to insure that we had an outstanding short holiday. In fact, they "accidently" overbooked the number of junior suites at the time we were scheduled to visit, and then mysteriously announced that they'd just "have to let us upgrade to the deluxe suite for no additional money". It pays to be on good terms with the concierge. (Thanks, Lauren!)
Classy and yet understated. The Muse is softly-lit and done in an elegant and muted scheme of color and polished hardwoods. In short, it's the very definition of refined. Among the best points of the Muse, with respect to neighboring and competing properties would be the size of its rooms. NYC is not noted for being a town featuring large hotel rooms without an astronomical pricetag. The Muse advertises that its rooms are 100-250 square feet larger than comparable quarters in the district, and its true. The Muse also has a PERFECT location, couldn't be better for seeing Broadway shows, and hanging around Times Square. The staff is top-notch. They solve every problem immediately, and yet they seem to disappear when you DON'T need them. To me that is perfect service. They don't get in the way, but meet every need easily. And last, the Muse isn't a large chain hotel. It's quieter and less-crowded. Civilized would be an excellent choice of adjective when describing the Muse. Summing up, let's go with Classy and civilized. : ) Oh, and one more thing... if you'd like to have a few drinks or beers, but not stray far from the hotel, there's an Irish bar next door. Go to the upstairs area, get your drinks and then try to secure yourself a seat on the small balcony. It's a great place to watch the street fun unfold below you...which is always extra-entertaining after you've had a few drinks. | | | | Comfort Inn Midtown: Economical (relatively) comfort in Midtown NYC Compare Rates NEW! | Tip Rating: | | | | |
We didn't actually stay at this hotel. We stayed across the street at the Muse. (see other tips) But in the interest of service to VTers worldwide, I decided to check out this Comfort Inn to see if it were a lower-priced alternative for those seeking lodging in the theater district of NYC.
Again, we didn't stay here. But, I visited the hotel and asked to see a room. The staff was very friendly and accomodating, and seemed very happy to have me considering their property for any future trips to the city. The rooms were of average NYC size, and were clean and comfortable. Staying at the Comfort Inn Midtown wouldn't be the sort of thing you told your grandchildren about someday, but if your goal is to "do Broadway" without dropping $400+ per night for a room, this is a darned good choice. I would stay here, and I am actually kind of picky about hotels. I recommend the Comfort Inn Midtown without any hesitation.
