The Waldorf Astoria: A Bit Of Class?    Check Rates

  • 3rd Time Lucky? We got a good deal with our holiday booking and decided to go upmarket..or so we thought. Common areas of the hotel are very old money and classy. Our room was tucked away in a corner, terrible view, and hadn't been updated for some years. The housekeeping staff were very nice, but the room certainly wasn't what I expected.

Great common areas. Not much to do around on an evening.Next visit we are going to rent an apartment.

  • This hotel is beautiful with a long history of famous guests, movies being shot here at the hotel and numerous other events. The hotel is situated on 50th and park avenue and lexington avenues, so its in an excellent location, near Rockefeller Center and many other attractions. Room was comfortable and service was excellent in all areas. This hotel is a bit pricey , but the rooms are comfortable, tastefully decorated and safe and secure.

Service is top notch. Beautiful lobby and restaurants

Westpark Hotel: Amazing, an affordable decent midtown hotel
  • Tip Rating:
  • I had an early doctor's appointment (7:30AM) on 5/12/03 so me and my husband decided to stay overnight rather than deal with rush hour traffic. We only live 1/2 hour away but this appointment was so important, we decided to be stress-free. I did an internet hotel search for any hotel near 57th/58th & Broadway. Only 2 hotels were under $200/night, the rest were extremely expensive. I booked the Westpark through www.hotels.com for an amazing $89.00/night. I expected a complete fleabag for that price but was pleasantly surprised. It was much nicer than expected.

The room was small (had to walk sideways to get to the other side of the bed) but the bathroom was clean and had Bath & Bodyworks toiletries and the sheets were clean. It's a perfect place to stay if you want to be near Central Park (one block north) or Times Square (16 blocks south). The subway station is across the street (1,3,9 etc) and there is a parking garage next door that if you enter between 5am-10am, it only costs $11.00 with tax. I left the hotel at 7:20 for a 7:30 appointment and we were still early. If booking, check www.hotels.com rather than www.westparkhotel.com since hotels.com gave a better rate than the hotel.

This is luxury...at least by my standards. It's pricy, but there is a more affordable deal for weekends and on the internet. (See below for site.)

The rooms are all themed, and there is a lovely patio/porch for eating breakfast and reading. There is also a wonderful indoor space for the same. There is a living room with flat screen television and fireplace.

I just love the place. I haven't stayed there yet, I only visited, but it's gorgeous.

Each floor is a different library (Dewey Decimal) category and each room on the floor is a topic within that category. Books are in each room and the art follows the same theme.

The staff is very friendly and will either help you or leave you alone, depending on what you want.

I was lucky enough to find "cheap" accomodation in NYC (compared to others I had already checked out, cause everything in NY is sooo expensive!) thanks to an old friend of mine who passed this tip on to me.... He lives there now and recently had some colleagues coming to NY for business, who were trying to find a decently priced place to stay... and I was totally HAPPY with the recommendation!

He gave me a web site different from the "official" hotel's website in order to book the room (http://pickwickarmsnewyork.com/), which is a Central Reservation Center that books the room for you and gives you special online rates... However, I checked both sites and it looks like both have the same rates, so you can use either one. I was lucky enough to get a single, semi-private bath room for only USD $89 a night + taxes (in fact if I had booked 1-2 weeks earlier the fee would have been USD $79 per night +tax but I booked very close to the check in date). They had an ever cheaper room, single occupancy w/shared bath (they're located in the corridor, but there's only the bathtub there, so I guess ALL the rooms have their toilet and sink as mine did), for USD $69 x night.

My room had a single bed and the shower & toilet were shared between 2 rooms. I never had a problem with my bathroom-neighbor, the system is pretty primitive but effective in order to guarantee your privacy both in the bathroom and in your room. There was hot water every time I needed it, not too much of it, but enough. The sink is right inside the room, quite handy. I can't say it's the most beautiful place I've ever stayed at, the carpet was a little stained and looked old (I personally don't care a damn about that!), but it was clean, the maid service was quite good and the view from the room... well, like from any other: just buildings! But it wasn't ugly, to be honest. I always like having a window, no matter that the sight isn't perfect.

In general, I was very pleased with my stay here and would definitely go back.

Nice location in town, walking distance to many of the main attractions of the city and to 2 different metro stations if you need to go farther (green and blue lines)... it's pretty clean, not noisy (at least everything around the room I got was pretty quiet) and you have all you need for staying the night: the rooms are small as everywhere in NYC, but you have enough space for you and your stuff, cable TV, closet, a desk and it's climatised -- it was GREAT to have a warm room to sleep in during the winter. Reception and elevators are very nice too. For the price, it's highly recommendable....

Note: These fares are from 2005 so I'm sure they have changed ever since, check the hotel's website to see what the current rates are!

Courtyard New York Manhattan Fifth Avenue: The right location    Check Rates
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • We arrived very late owing to a power failure at JFK. This meant our room was taken but they upgraded us to a room with two doubles so we had a bit more room. The rooms in the hotel are generally quite small but OK for tourists. The breakfast was your usual 10 spoons of sugar with plenty of coffee to wash it down with. At around $100 US it is keenly priced for this sort of location.

Red Roof Manhattan: Recommended for low budgets    Check Rates
  • Tip Rating:

  • Excellent service by front desk. Staff are extremely helpful and polite. Rooms are clean on check-in although there will not be room service (someone to make up room) througout your stay. I shared a double bed room with 2 others and space was sufficient even with our large baggages. Of course this is a budget hotel, don't expect Hilton-style rooms! However our room was close to the ice-machine and disrupted our sleep 1st night whenever it dispensed ice or made new cubes. Problem solved by unplugging the unit. Breakfast included but a simple buffet spread of just cold muffins, cold danish pastries and coffee/tea.

Great views from higher floors 15th storey and up. Excellent front-desk service. Great strategic location within walking distance to a metro station (34th Street), Times Square, Rockefella Centre, Theatre District and many many eating places! We even walked to Central Park. Would definitely return when in the area.

Gershwin Hotel is a good place to be at NYC. Walking distance from nearly everywhere with a funny decoration.

The first night I had a suit cause the normal room where full ... room 1043 (I think) wowww it was a great suit ... with such a great decoration !!!! over the bed's head .. the head of a gembok made of paper ... wow ... it was very funny

The rest of the time I did had a double room that was ok ... but not so funny and nice :)

    Downstairs a music bar.

  • I stayed at this hotel during Thanksgiving of 2001 and I can only assume that it is still pretty much the same way that I left it. I got a reasonable rate off of Expedia for it, which along with the location is the only reason we stayed there. It's a huge hotel, capable of accommodating probably thousands, but it's really looking its age and lacks amenities of hotels half of its size. There were several problems with our stay. To begin with, there were three of us and I had said so in the reservation. Yet we only had two twin beds. The hotel staff said that there was not an available cot so two of us had to sleep together-NOT an easy fit. The floor in the room was tile and not carpeted, which made it a little cold on early morning feet. There was virtually no furniture in the massive lobby and hundreds of people were checking in. It took us an hour and a half to get checked in. While one person stood in line for awhile, the other two would rest. Yet we got yelled at by security for sitting on the floor. (There was nowhere else to sit.)

The location of the hotel is its best asset. It's within walking distance of Macy's, Pennsylvania Station, and Madison Square Garden. It also had a pretty good hotel restaurant, as well as being connected to Lindy's Diner. There are definitely better values around town, though, if you look for them. This one definitely needs to be renovated and refurbished. In another city, I couldn't see it being worth more than $65 a night. In New York it was twice that.

So arraived in NYC a day late thanks to bad weather which closed the airport. Unfortunatley that alswo meant my hotel reservation was cancelled so I also arrive late at night with no where to stay. Be warned if you arrive late at night in the summer time then finding hostel accomadation can be difficult. After an hour of calling around I found something in Harlem which made for a long journey from Newark in the middle of the night. The hostel was OK I guess but everyone in there seemed to be in a similar situation ie couldn't find anything better. I just stayed there the one night. As soon as it was light I shipped out!
