| | | | |
I was pleasantly surprised by my experience at the Moderne. The nice-sized room was spotless...the king bed "heavenly." The all-marble bath was as nice as hotels I've stayed at 3 times the price. Lots of steaming hot water too. With just a few rooms per floor the halls were quiet. Yes the elevator is a bit slow but, with only 7 floors I never had a long wait. The phone had a data port and voicemail....and there was a CD player at bedside. Also there's a nice coffee lounge on the second floor, overlooking 55th St. The Moderne isn't fancy and there are a few very minor signs of wear. But at the great rate I found thru Hotels.com it was an uncommon value for NYC. And to be just 2-3 blocks from most theatres, numerous restaurants, and two subway stations....I'll be back!
The staff is what made my stay outstanding. The two young men who alternate at the front desk could not have been more helpful. They really came through was when NYC experienced a serious cold wave just as I was checking in for my 4-day stay. The "high" that day was 4 degrees..with wind-chills at minus ten. I phoned the desk because the room was chilly and, within 15 minutes, the day engineer arrived to adjust the heating unit and clean its filter. But that didn't seem to help so I called the front desk again. In less than an hour someone knocked at my door with a newly purchased portable radiator. Yes, they had actually sent someone out to get this one just for me. The New York Palace, in midtown Manhattan, successfully merges a contemporary 55-story hotel tower with the historic Villard Houses (1882). Each guest room and suite has a magnificent view of the Manhattan skyline, many overlooking St. Patrick's Cathedral. All rooms have upgraded amenities, such as marble bathrooms, hair dryers, mini-bars, in-room safes, fax machines, and three two-line telephones. All guests enjoy access to a 7,000-square-foot fitness center. The Towers section, a hotel within a hotel, offers private registration, express elevators, and mantre d'itage service. Tower rooms and suites feature two distinctive dicors on alternating floors. One is classical European, and the other is contemporary with art deco influences. | | | | The Westin New York at Times Square: A heavenly piece of New York!

The hotel describes its rooms as "Heavenly" and it really was! We were upgraded to an "Executive Club" room, with plenty of space, comfy chairs and a coffee table, flat screen large TV, Apple mac, huge shower head, free newspapers, a marshmallow duvet and wonderful pillows and stylish modern decor. There is a blackout blind and double glazing that keeps the bright lights and noise out. A continental breakfast in the "Executive Club" was included - a decent spread of the usual cereals, breads, meats, juices, yoghurts and fruit. There is a gym on site but - despite good intentions - we never quite made it! Overall a very comfortable stay. Thoroughly recommended!
The hotel is built over a Starbucks and a cinema - you can grab a film and a coffee without going out in the cold! | | | | Thirty Thirty Hotel New York: Great Midtown Manhattan Hotel

Waldorf-Astoria Hotel is a famously luxurious hotel in New York. It has been housed in two historic landmark buildings in New York City. The first, designed by architect Henry J. Hardenbergh, was on the Fifth Avenue site of the Empire State Building. The present building at 301 Park Avenue in Manhattan is a 47 storey, 625 ft. (191 m) Art Deco landmark, designed by architects Schultze and Weaver and dating from 1931. The hotel is the flagship of the Waldorf-Astoria Collection, a chain of upscale hotels spun out of the Hilton Hotels and Conrad Hotels chains, as well as some new hotels. The name, Waldorf=Astoria, now officially appears with a double hyphen, but originally the single hyphen was employed, as recalled by a popular expression and song, "Meet Me at the Hyphen." The modern hotel has three American and classic European restaurants, and a beauty parlor located off the main lobby. Several luxurious boutiques surround the distinctive lobby, which has won awards for its restoration to the original period character. An even more luxurious, virtual "hotel within a hotel" in its upper section is known as The Waldorf Towers operated by Conrad Hotels & Resorts. The hotel has its own railway platform as part of Grand Central Terminal, used by Franklin D. Roosevelt, Adlai Stevenson, and Douglas MacArthur, among others. An elevator large enough for Franklin D. Roosevelt's car provides access to the platform The hotel's name with a single hyphen is engraved and gilded over the entrance.
