The staff isn't the friendliest of people, but the room was way better than other hostels i've stayed at. Me and my boyfriend had a private room on the second floor, with a window we could open that faced the main street. We would fall asleep and wake up to NYC noises...music to my ears. We had a double bed, shelves, and a sink. Bathrooms and showers were steps outside our door. No airconditioning though, really hot at night, next time i'd bring a fan! If my research was efficient, this is the cheapest hostel in NYC for private rooms that had pictures of what they looked like on the internet.... really cute place, wouldnt mind staying there again... felt like we had our own little new york apartment for a few days...
There was a terasse in the back with picninc tables and pretty graffiti type paintings on brick, but it closed pretty early and then all of us drinking beer and wanting to socialize had to cram into this small kitchen, rec room type of place. But even that closed at midnite... facilities to cook your own food was great, they had pots and pans and such, stoves and fridges and microwaves.... internet available too, and a pool table. | | | | Greenpoint YMCA: If you don't mind cockroaches... | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
The Whitehouse Hotel may be the cheapest place offering single and double bedrooms right in the heart of NYC, but, having stayed at enough hostel in my younger years, I couldn't face the lack of a ceiling to the cubicle-privacy? So I found a hardly more expensive alternative in the more remote neighbourhood of Greenpoint, Brooklyn... On my second stay there, I picked the regular (ie cheapest) type of bedroom, wich, with a weekly fee, brought the night rate somewhere around 37$... breakfast at a local diner included!! Well, let's face it, that room and the corridors were badly in need of redecorating-filthy carpeting and bedcover (and I once saw a huge cockroach runing right under some bedroom door at the inferior level), although the sheets were perfectly clean and the towels changed every day. Toilets, showers and sinks reasonably clean considered they're being used by dozens of people every day, and I never really had to wait... You can also use the swimming pool and attend other classes if you want to exercise (it's included in the price)... In any case, it made it possible for me to spend close to 2 weeks in the city twice, both in the fall of 2005 and the spring of 2006, and I didn't mind the commuting (you get there with the subway, G and L lines)... But if you're ready to face old and dusty, I still recommend to pick a double "Deluxe", which has a very comfortable double bed and a TV (not the main point), and, in my experience, was cleaner than the regular bedroom...
CHEAP!! Quiet area with lots of restaurants and places to buy food (I love the "Natural Garden" on Manhattan Avenue-it's Polish and has its own brands, but it also has fresh fruits, drinks, yoghurts and hot tea and coffee...)... | | | | Vanderbilt Ymca: Cheap, convenient, clean but noisy Compare Rates NEW! | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
The YMCA Vanderbilt has a great location, the rooms are basic and small, but they are clean and you can use the pool and other facilities if you show your hotel keycard. The restaurant is reasonable and the food ok - good for breakfast. Security is great, and they have a store-room to leave your luggage in while you explore more of New York on your last day. Airport transfers leave right outside every 2 hours, for less than 20 dollars. However, my stay coincided with 2 huge german tour groups of schoolkids and lots of university students treating the place like a dorm. The noise at night was truly unbelievable. The booking staff seemed to have placed everyone on my floor, and I soon realised the showers and toilets 2 floors down were deserted and a lot cleaner!! I had to ask the guys next door to be quiet twice, then finally had to fetch security. I was assured someone would speak to them for the next night, but if anything they were worse, banging on the wall and leaving beer bottles and rubbish propped up against my door. I spoke to several other guests who were also fed up with this. I think the Y needs to realise that placing individual travellers in the midst of rowdy groups isn't a great idea.
A pool onsite is great, the staff are friendly, and you get a real sense of how much the community benefits from the Y, with the lobby busy all day with children, teenagers and office workers using the facilities. There's also a 24 hour internet shop at 47th and 3rd, literally less than a minute from the front door. The Gershwin experience begins as soon as you walk into the Pop Art-bedecked lobby, a museum space unto itself that contains an actual Campbell's Soup Can by Andy Warhol, signed by the artist himself. The welcome continues at the front desk, where our guests are greeted by the friendly, multinational staff, who between them boast a formidable array of languages-and smiles! A veritable arts festival unto itself, the Gershwin also boasts The Living Room, a separate performance space that features regular music, comedy, and theater performances.
