Accommodation in Harlem area

by Glen30

Hi,

I found a nice apartment in the Harlem area and was wondering if this is a nice and safe area to stay in.
The name of the B&B is "mont morris bed & Breakfast". Has anyone stayed here before?

Cheers
Glen

We don't know that bed & breakfast, but be careful. Parts of Harlem are definitely sketchy, especially at night.

The tripadvisor reviews look pretty good:

You should be fine staying in Harlem and will have I'm sure a fabulous time. The folks who usually bring the scare on visitors about our city neighborhoods are almost always non-New Yorkers. But Harlem these days and has been for a long time, a good area to be in for living and even just visiting the city with tons of great local stores and restaurants, plus it's got terrific history with the museums and jazz venues to boot. So, rest assured you'll do very okay in Harlem, but use considerable caution anyhow, especially at evenings, as is true anywhere in New York City. Happy trails.

Cheap Accomodations around Columbia

by scheherazade

I'm coming to New York to visit Columbia University and am looking for a cheap place to stay that is either close to Morningside Heights or easily accessed by transit. I'm probably looking at finding B&B-style accomodations that may have a shared bathroom in order to save money. These aren't always the easiest to find. Do you have any recommendations?

I am looking into the Mont Morris, which is right across from Marcus Garvey Memorial Park in Harlem, but I'm not sure as a single female whether it would be appropriate to walk in that neighborhood after dark. Any recommendations? Alternative suggestions?

Check out the International house / www.ihouse-nyc.org .
IT is on riverside drive & w.122nd street next to columbia university ,riverside church & the riverside office building . The International house have several locations around the the world . I have been to the one in paris ,france at the internatonal university in paris .(14 th arr.) .The accomadations are very inexpensive also check out if you reserve a 10 day in advance you only pay 45 or 50 dollars a day. Better than 2.5 star(marriot, best western, etc. hotel in midtown manhattan going for 350 to 400 dollars a night . / The INT'L HOUSE Rooms are like good . they are not hostels more like the university professor accomadations private quarters. / Also the area is fine .

And here's a link to the tripadvisor.com review and info page on HI's hostel. It's very popular, very cheap, and convenient for Columbia.

The Brandon Residence for Women is also conveniently located, and highly recommended:

Good luck!

Accomodation

by tfrance14

Hello, when I go away I like to rent apartments as opposed to hotels. Can anyone tell me any good, reliable websites that do short-term holiday rentals. Thanks in advance. Also I wouldn't mind staying in Brooklyn, any particular parts to avoid. Cheers.

Re: Accomodation

Short term apt. rentals are common elsewhere, but in NYC they're mostly illegal. You'll find lots of listings on sites like craigslist though. There are also sites like VRBO that offer listings, but they do not vet the listings. Be beware, there's no way to tell what's real and what's a scam. The best thing to do is never, ever send money in advance (and don't be fooled into thinking you're safe with paypal).

If you want to stay on the cheap, either stay at a hostel, or the YMCA.

Thanks for your response, it's not so much that I wanna do things on the cheap, its just I dont like being confined to a hotel room and you feel like more of a local, and I don't trust hostels. I found this site, have you come across it before, www.apartments-in-new-york.com. With regards to the money i'm from a big city and you'd have to work extremely hard to con me out of my money. Thanks for your help.

Travel Tips for New York City

Dont waste a minute...see everything!

by Redchilli

If its your first time to NY then you have to visit the empire state building. It costs about £10 for a ticket which with given you access inside the building where you take an elevator right to the top (102 floors). The panoramic view of the city is amazing! especially at night when all the lights are visible, one tip thought-dont buy anything from the gifts shop because the same souvenirs are alot cheaper on the high street. I have alot of great memories about New York. If your looking for bargains and designer immitation jewellery, clothing etc then you need to visit Canal Street in China town - the street is packed with market stalls and its difficult to tell the different between the copy designer goods and genuine designers...we spent an entire day shopping around this area.
Ice-skating in central park was also amazing - we went one evening when its a bit quieter and took a horse and cart tour around the park.

Midtown

by tvdm

visit Midtown! Even if you skip everything else that New York has to offer, this small area boasts so many sights, food and nightlife spots that it'll keep you busy forever. It has to be the food! New York has caters to every taste and every budget. You can eat all day long and hardly spend any money - well, compared to Western Europe, that is...

NY has so many things to see...

by Tocco

NY has so many things to see and do where do I start. First take a walk around the Island of Manhatten. See 5th Ave., Times Square, Central Park, Empire State Building, Downtown (the Village). You can spend 100 life times touring this small Island and never come close to seeing everything. So do not feel bad if you miss something New York is always special around the Holidays. Christmass in NY is magical on its own.
NYC takes its holidays to a grand scale. The Holloween parade in the Village is an outrageous event. The 4th of July firework display is a must. Do not forget the world famous Thanksgiving day Parade and ehw ball dropping at Times Square on New Years Eve.

Go eat here a lot...

Chinatown rocks for awesome food. We just walked around drunk and naked and found places at random to eat at. Tones of good food. Can be a bit slow sometimes.

WOO! Wonton soup and french fries #1! Getting drunk with a beaver.

The wall street area

by Nathalie_B

This street has always been the most important one for New Yorkers. The street was named for a wall that protected Manhattan from attacks of Indians at the times of the Dutch traders. The wall however, did not help to stop British, who came to the city by water and eventually overtook the New Amsterdam, later giving it the name New York, after the Duke of York.
Today's Wall street is the center of business in the city of New York, and is known as the financial center of the world.

The bronze statue of a bull, the symbol of Wall Street, has long been important for the traders, it is located at Wall Street and Broadway. The statue's nose has a lighter color than the rest of it from being polished by the hands of passers-by who want to earn fortunes.Try it yourself, who knows maybe you'll win a lottery ;-)
