eating in Soho
by shunter1
we are staying in Tribeca and would like to venture to Soho for a 'good food experience'...somewhere with loads of atmosphere, maybe music and not too expensive.
Thanks everyone.

I like Balthazar's on Spring Street. It has a very Parisian feeling about it. Even if you eat somewhere else, do try the bar.

ForestQueen beat me to it... I always enjoyed Balthazar, too. There used to be a place called Zoe's, but that was a few years ago and they may be closed. If you're in the mood for Malaysian food, Penang was always good, but they, too, may be gone by now. I hear Balthazar is going to open a place in London, and I do hope so!

we tried to get in Balthazar last year when we visited for a late lunch - but even at 2.30pm on a Friday it was really busy :-( i guess you really need to book - it always seems to get good reviews and is busy which is always a good sign!
We instead tried Bar 89 - totally by chance - had been to the UGG store nearby and it was freezing - they had the craziest bathrooms in there! - had one of the best burgers and waffle fries ever - but way too much food! - good atmosphere quite a cool place and you can just rock up for cocktails if you want! we loved it there - infact I think Soho is one of myfave places in New York!
The link gives you a feel for the bar http://nymag.com/listings/bar/bar_89/
The bar doesn't seem to have a website yet

Arturo's on Houston Street - totally untrendy, funky Atmosphere, Brick oven Pizza and Red Sauce Italian, not expensive and free jazz every night.

Arturo's for sure. Check out Sullivan Street between Broome and W Houston, plenty of good places too! Less touristy than the other northside of W Houston.
Travel Tips for New York City
Time Square
by Paul2001
For many tourists, Time Square, where 42nd Street meets Broadway, is the heart of New York City. For certain, there seems to be more tourists here than in any other part of the city as it is the centre of the Theatre District. I have never been overly impressed by Time Square but I still recommend that you stroll through. It is probably the best place in New York to people watch.
When I first visited New York in 1989, Time Square was evolving into a more family friendly environment. 42nd Street was still saturated with porno shops and looking very much like it does in "Taxi Driver". Today this has changed immensely. The street is lines with family oriented entertainment and theatres and ones grandmother walk down here. On Times Square itself there is all the usual chain stores from Disney to Virgin Records. These are never a draw for me but others might be thrilled. On the south side of the Square is the Times Tower, where the New York Times once had its headquarters hence the squares name. This tower is not much to look at but the famous digital headline new ticker and the huge advertisements. Still it a major symbol of New York.
Traveling to The Big Egg
by mcpangie
Everything is big in New York City, including the eggs, and the tall tale movies about monsters terrorize the streets of New York. I'd hate to come across the monster that hatched from that egg! This is an exhibit near in the Bronx Zoo, that I mad my poor friend pose by, little did he know I'd make a goofy tip on VT with it.

BE PREPARED!! At least in this section of Upstate NY. This area can be very warm in the summer and very cold in the winter. During the spring, the mosquitos will carry you away and thunderstorms can come upon you in a boat very quickly. Enjoy her, but respect mother nature and be ready for what she may throw at you. Here is a shot of the view from our beach.
New York city remains the...

New York city remains the biggest city in the United States as far as population is concerned, with seven and half million people within its city limits. The most densely populated metropolis of all the major North American cities, 24,500 people per square mile, compared to Los Angeles with 7,600. Within this area the concentration of tourist attraction is great and very varied. Manhattan Island is where most of the great attractions are for most visitors to New York. Unlike, Los Angeles, New York has a more active night life, most places remain open until the early morning hours. You are also allowed much more freedom in New York, it has always been this way. The differences between both cities are quite striking actually. Starting from the weather, which is quite extreme in New York from Summer to Winter, to whether you are allowed to smoke in bars and discos. I have always loved New York, and would have moved to live there, if it was not for two major drawbacks, its extreme weather conditions from January to July and the cost of living in this City is at least 20 to 30% more than the Southern California Area.

The last time I was there, I totally enjoyed going to Total Request Live. Even though we were too 'mature' to be asked in, we enjoyed hanging outside with the crowd! The kids were very accepting of us and we really had a great time! The shot to the left is one that my daughter took on our computer with the snappy of my friend and I standing outside.....I am the one with the license plate that says L10JOHN....yes (everyone always asks:) it IS my real plate from my vehicle and my best friend Jodi is right beside me to my left! There are times that I like quiet, but for the most part I really like the lively city. New York City is definitely LIVELY!! I think that is a fun place to visit. I hope to see even more the next time that we go up.
