Carmine's and Acqua (Pecks Slip). Carmine's serves "family style" i.e portions are huge, enough for two or three people.

If you are going to be in NYC for more than a couple of days, I would not limit myself to restaurants that are near your hotel.

I agree with Dino. I don't think the South Street Seaport area is really known for good restaurants, Italian or otherwise, many are just touristy places. Of course if you buy an unlimited travel card for the subways and buses. going anywhere in Manhattan won't be a problem. There are many nice Italian restaurants particularly in Greenwich Village although I also agree that Carmine's, right in Times Square, is very good. There were many suggestions given on this very same subject a few days ago. You should read it through it in the same NYC forum this thread appears.

Just to clarify, there is a Carmine's at the seaport, as well as Times Square and Broadway on the Upper West Side. Any of these are better for groups of four or more rather than one or two people.

Hi. Welcome to VT! Your profile is completely blank, so we don't know if you have any travel experience. The South Street Seaport is purely a tourist location, but that doesn't mean it's a bad place to be. It just means that a local New Yorker would not bother going there. Since it is very close to the East River, it is not so close to the subway. There's alot of road work going on along South St, which may make for more honking, street noise, etc. You'd have to walk maybe 3/4 mile up Fulton St, to the William Street entrance of the labyrinth of Fulton Street Station (2,3,4,5,A,C,J,M trains). You can take a 15 minute walk, due north passing under the Brooklyn Bridge to Chinatown (see my tips). You can also take the M6 bus(I think) up through Chinatown and onto Soho, the Village, Midtown. Go to mta.org for bus and train maps.

In general, glasses can take 5-10 days to be made. Mine took 4 weeks this time because they couldn't get it right. It took the lab 3 tries. Most optical stores don't do their own work. They send it out to a lab to make the glasses.

Lenscrafters (which is a chain) and some other optical stores offer one day service but that is if your prescription is "simple".

I can't heap enough praise on LensCrafters! They literally saved me from going blind. Their prices are good and their service is friendly. Some of their locations have opticians as well. You can check their web site (www.lenscrafters.com) for that information. It appears the nearest location is at 60 Broad St., but they have stores all over the city.

If it's just simple reading glasses you need, you can get them cheaply at any Duane Reade or other drug store chain. Nicer selections are at dept. stores, but try the discount stores first -- Loehmann's, Daffy's, etc.
