good value for the price

If you're expecting the Hilton, don't stay here. If you just want someplace clean and comfortable to lay your head after a busy day wandering the streets of Manhattan, it's a decent stay. The only thing in your room is a bed basically....but what else do you need. The showers are clean, bit of a problem with water sometimes, but bearable. Can be noisy, but shared accom always is. Great area, friendly people, and easily accessible to everything and everywhere. We would stay here again. Yes, it's true the front foyer smells a bit and it would be nice if they actually checked your ID when returning your key.....but we never had a problem with security and left expensive camera gear in the room with no problems.

It has a strange charm of its own

Having never stayed in hostel accomodation before, I was very wary as to what to expect from the Bowery, especially given the reviews posted on the site prior to my trip. Admittedly, when I arrived I was slightly unnerved by the room we were given. Also, the shower facilities were pretty dirty and I think that a bottle of bleach could make all the difference there. I think I had the worst snorer in the world staying opposite which meant I was awake by 4am most mornings.
However, by the end of the stay I was really sad to say goodbye to the Bowery. There were 'colouful' locals in the reception area (and sleeping in the lounge area on some occasions) were just old guys who were down on their luck, and were content in just playing cards and having a coffee. At no point did I feel threatened while sitting there. I have stayed in many fantastic hotels in the past but I think I caught a glimse of a wider variety of people and lifestyles than I could have anywhere else. So all in all, despite minor sleep deprivation and a pretty grubby shower, I would have no qualms about staying here again.

No Problems Here At All

Stayed here for a week (5th - 12th Nov 2004). I had read all the reviews (good and bad) bud decided to go for it - if it was that bad i could move and was on a tight budget anyway.

I have no complaints about this place - it is exactly as advertised - for $30 a night in manhatten - thats about all you'll get! - i used it as a base to get out and see the city - and used the room as nothing more than a changing room and place to crash for few hours a night.

Yes its noisy - but no more noisy that other hostels where you share with up to 6 others! - at least at this place you get to lock your own door - so can leave things in the room with a bit of confidence.

The staff were all friendly, and the locals in the foyer gave no problems at all. All the questions i asked the staff were answered.

I think some of the reviews were a bot unfair based on my experience - dont expect much - but expect what you pay for! - if not you cna always spend $100+ to stay in a hotel!!!

Cheap Room, Cheap Owner

The mattresses are worn and old, the sound can be a major problem due to selfish idiots who have no consideration for any one else, which you get in all hostels. Still being woken up every night by idiots talking in their rooms or on their phones or snoring and coughing all night is a major stress especailly in a footsore town like NYC. The showers are tiny with variable water, one day no hot water whatsoever, the shower backed up one day and flooded the floor. Toilets are often broken down or do not flush. I stayed for three weeks due to a shrinking travel budget and in that time they do not change the sheets and towels at all. The assistant manager could be very unhelpful and surly, I watched her keep a traveller who had lost their wallet waiting for an hour and half to cash a travellers cheque before refusing to change it. Strange sort of customer service really. Seriously the rooms are closets but did not have any problems with security, and for thirty bucks a night in an area that is seriously going off it is fine. You get what you pay for especially in manhattan. Most of the permanent residents are fine , keep to themselves and are interesting to talk to , apart from one who is hanging around the lobby day and night trying to sleaze onto every single woman who came into the foyer or walked past in the street. There is a faster internet connection with keyborads that have the leters marked on themfor the same price as they charge just up the street. $1 for 10 minutes. The TV is large and they have complete cable. If you are only in NYC for four nights you could deal with it but for a longer stay and on a slightly larger budget you can do better. If the owner oput back into the property some of the oney that he is making, the place was nar full the whole time it wouldbe beter for everyone and make it a much better place to stay.

great stay

All you need while in NYC is a bed in a private area since there is something to do 24/7. Well, this is it. Blocks from 2 different subway lines and K-mart if you need anything(toiletries, socks, underwear). Great cheap food in the neighborhood(Indian, Italian, Ukranian, Cuban, Jewish). The staff and residents were very helpful and friendly and I couldn't have asked for a better stay. There is plenty of storage room under the bed, but the rooms and showers could use more wallhooks and shelves for hanging and storing backpacks, jackets, and clothes. My room had two wallhooks and no shelves and some rooms had neither wallhooks or shelves. I went to one of the half-dozen or so 99 cent stores in the city and bought some stick-on hooks and an over the door wallhook with five hooks. The place is reasonably clean and housekeeping is on the job ever mid-morning. The first night might be a shock, but after the first night you do grow to enjoy the place. Everyone I talked with agreed on that. This is an century-old buildling and it isn't perfect, but for $32.00 a night, a great bargain in the greatest city in the world!

I have stayed there twice, and while not the best in the world, its inexpenisve, the staff is nice, and the neighorhood is real New York.

There are also several major transit lines on the side streets.

Its basically an old world flop house ( cubicles), upgraded to be bearble to the tourist.

Nothing fancy, but its clean and secure/

hope this helps

nicholas

P.S.,,,,one negative though, the heat there is strong in the winter it will knock you down
