Steak/Chophouse near Madison Square Garden
by collegeprof
We're visiting NYC with children age 11 and 8 for the day to see Cirque de Soleil "Wintuk." We have about 2hours for lunch and would like a spot near Madison Square Garden which would serve chops and steaks. Thanks in advance!

Keen's Steakhouse is the place for you. It's at 72 W. 36th, about 4 blocks from the Garden. There is also Nick and Stef's, on 33rd St. right in the same building as the Garden, but Keen's is better.

IMO, I would go with Nick and Stef's. Keens is a stuffy business crowd!

Macy's Department Store a block away from the garden on West 34th and 7th Avenue has a wonderful restaurant down in the basement which has an extensive menu which includes steaks and a whole lot more

Keen's is the quintessential NYC steakhouse, leagues above Nick & Stef's, imho. But like all steakhouses, it's expensive.
Honestly, I'd skip steaks and chops for lunch anyway, especially with kids. The less expensive places aren't very good, and the top ones cater to business/expense account crowds.
There's a good pub nearby, Stout, that has good burgers and such, that I would recommend for kids.

One of my "go-to" places in that neighborhood is a Greek cafeteria style place on 7th Ave. between 33rd-34th Streets. Get a platter with a half chicken (really, really delicious!), sides and salad. Cheap and very good. They also have pizza in there, but the chicken is their star.
If you enjoy Korean, you're right near "Koreatown," with a whole block full of restaurants.
There's also a Brother Jimmy's BBQ on 8th Ave. and 31st St. that would be fine for lunch.

Thanks for the great suggestions. We're going out to dinner in the theater district and doing Italian so I think Stout's will be our choice.

If you are getting away from the steakhouse idea then I will also put forward my go-to place near MSG, Tir na Nog on 8th Ave. just north of 33rd: http://www.tirnanognyc.com/lunch.php. It is a good Irish place with food that is somewhat better than standard pub fare. The happy hour crowds are loud, as are pre-game times, but at lunchtime it is very pleasant.

Madison square garden had better serve with carefulness and ordinarily, and not be overly dazed on the entire business by chops and steaks

Travel Tips for New York City
BIKES IN NEW YORK
by stellamia
Here's my advice for your bike-problem! I have lived and worked in NYC for 10 years - also as a tour-guide. And that is why I agree with the other responses you got: LEAVE THAT BIKE ALONE! The second day after my arrival in NY my very expensive bike disappered in front of FAO Schwarz, the toy store, together with a huge chain around! You are lucky if you survive on those streets on bike! The worst are the cab-drivers, sorry to say. USE YOUR LEGS AND THE SUBWAY! I recommend a longer distance by subway and then work your way back by foot! Only by walking you see most of this challenging city - and don't always keep your eyes towards the top of the high-rises, like almost every tourist is doing...
Have tons of fun!
A great website for visitors to the Apple

Especially if you've never been the the City before, visit www.askanewyorker.com Even though I no longer live in there, it will always be my home town. Like all NYers, I'm proud to share it with tourists. My best, and worst memories of the city were looking out from my office window and watching the WTC being built . The worst, was watching it fall. Please visit Ground Zero and watch as the site becomes more magnificent than ever before.

take the Staten Island Ferry to view Downtown Manhattan and Statue of Liberty The nice New Yorkers who not only take time to give us detailed directions, one at Riverside Park cared enough to check if we went the right way and walked all the way back cross the street to see if we needed more help, and the other New Yorker came from UK went out of his way took us on a long walk to exit the underground maze like metro station to get to the Time Square, and rushed back to make sure we will get to the best part of Time Square.

go to Niagara Falls! It's a struggling town, with some vacant store fronts, but the falls are the falls, and you really should go see them. The best view is from the Canadian side, which is easily accessible by driving or walking across the border from the Niagara side. Very clean and safe town. Walked around at night with no problems. Find out about the hydropower plant in Niagara Falls. It's massive and awesome. I read up on it before I went, and the magnitude of what it does is fantastic. Then, when you get there and see the innocuous water towers standing by the side of the highway, you'll know what they do. Take the opportunity to watch the water level drop in the basin after midnight when the plant kicks in and starts sucking the river water. The falls will noticeably diminish, which is why they do it after midnight.
New Yorks Finest!

NYPD and me downtown in New York city.
There were really about 6 of the Finest NYPD gathered here when I got this picture with them. They are such celebrities and heroes of the USA now.
(my idea is the others stepped out to observe)
Smart cops! :o)
