Shopping for clothes in New York?

by italmelb

Hi All

While I will be in New York in Mid-December I would like to buy some clothes so I was wondering if you could suggest me some places

I am looking for jeans mainly (good quality but also good price)and some winter boots

Any advice would be truly appreciated!

Thanks

As an Aussie with the dollar the way it is I think anyway in the US will be cheap for jeans won't it? I am pretty run of the mill but Levis, Jag, Esprit (that one might be females only) are all less than half the price we pay in Australia.

Not in the city, but there's a huge outlet mall in Central Valley, NY. You can catch a bus at the Port Authority in NYC. Lots of designer clothing at great price.

We have many discount "off price" stores. For shoes try DSW on 14th Street & Union Square. In the same building is Filene's Basement for clothing and a block away is Nordstrom's Rack which is the discount/sale shop for the high priced Nordstrom's.

Macys anad JC Penny (34th Street 6th Ave) always has sales so try them. Century 21 @ 21 Cortlandt St (opposite ground zero) is another store that has discounts on well known designer's.

And you should search onlne "manhattan discount stores" and see many places that are downloaded.

You are going into the holiday shopping season so it is a tinsel town and there are many holiday markets which are lovely to see.

Have fun.

as for wide jean selection

you can consider shopping along west broadway where the entire stretch is nothing but door after door of shopping

OMG stores has good jean selection at reasonable prices and there's a levi's store to be found here as well

As for winter-boots I would visit the Dr Martens Store on Spring Street.
I´ll be doing that myself coming january.

for Boots, visit David Z, there are several David Z shops, great prices on Ugg Timberland etc, been around for a while and were recommended to me by 3 New Yorkers, they were right, got my Timberland much cheaper than in UK.

Travel Tips for New York City

On Arrival

by sparky2008

Take the train. it's $13 one-way or at least it was when i was there not so long ago. it's comfortable and runs at regular intervals.

Also, a good hotel to stay in is the Madison Hotel on E27th street. it's cheap and cheerful and is in a great location. we stayed there last december and of all the times i've visited NYC, it has been the best hotel i've stayed in. it's 5 blocks from Empire State Building, has a delicious deli at the corner of 28th and is close to the tube. hope this helps.

If architecture is your thing, you have to wander sown Fifth to St. Patrick's Cathedral.

The horse and carriage ride in Central Park is a must. The first time i visited the Statue of Libery and Ellis Island and saw all the exhibits from the past.

i miss the pace of life, the great food and shopping and the wonderful architecture. also the nightlife is pretty good!

Hang out around Time Square,...

by ronco4704

Hang out around Time Square, just to watch the people. Ride the subways. Very safe during regular hours. I pick up a subway map at the ticket booth. If I look at it while riding the train I always have New Yorkers asking for directions. Great way to meet people casually. The theater (when I can afford it). I have never seen a really bad show, and a lot of really great shows over the last 15 years.

Keuka Lake, Wine Country,...

by ILuvTSO

Keuka Lake, Wine Country, Upstate NY, rented a house on the lake, Inexpensive, did lots of wine touring. Visit NYC all the time, live 15 minutes away. Great place to do anything at anytime. From broadway theater, museums, concerts, clubs etc.

The most beautiful views

by Nathalie_B

The Seaport is within walking distance of Wall Street and Lower Manhattan's many tourist destinations, and is listed as one of New York City's five top attractions. Street performers, outdoor concerts, landmark buildings, excursion vessels, historic ships, the holiday Chorus Tree, breathtaking views of the Brooklyn Bridge and Statue of Liberty create a unique waterfront environment you will find only at The Seaport.
