H.I. New york is located in the upper west side of Manhattan , on Amsterdam Avenue not far from 103rd Street station, it's clean and the stuff are friendly, may be the only thing is that it's a little bit far from Downtown manhattan but not far from transportation at least ;)

I strongly recommend against it. It is a big impersonal place, and under the best of circumstances they treat their customers like dogs at the pound.
If you have problems there, they just don't care:
1) A drunken roommate urinated on the carpet one night. I told the person at the desk. Their response was to move me to another room, not to clean it.
2) They rented their hall ( 20 ft from sleeping rooms ) to a church for one evening. At 11:00 pm the singing and halleluhaaing was keeping us awake. Desk clerk said it would be over by 11:30. Subsequent hourly questions were met with similar lies. It finally quieted down at 2:30am.
And they overcharged my credit card.

This was the first time I had ever stayed at a hostel so I was slightly apprehensive about sharing a room with 7 complete strangers. But staying at a hostel was one of the best things I could have done and my trip to America got off to a flying start. I met loads of people here during the 4 days that I stayed here and would definitely recommend it to anyone else.
The check in desk is open 24 hours a day so even if your flight is delayed (as mine was) you dont need to worry about getting there too late.
Every Saturday, the hostel organises a free 18 hour walking tour of the city. (That wasnt a typo - it is actually 18 hours!).
The only downsides to the hostel are that it is quite a way from the main tourist sites and the surrounding areas appear to be slightly rundown but central park is less than five minutes away which is great. and the metro station is just a block away as well so its always easy to get to Downtown.
The hostel has a massive courtyard which is a great place to chill out. There is also a balcony overlooking the courtyard. Leave a Comment
