Staying in NYC
by SandiM about Marriott Courtyard Times Sq So/Hampton Inns Seaprt
When staying in NYC for a week or more, and you want to experience more than one area, just do what I did: I booked 3 nights at the Marriott Courtyard then moved south to the Hampton Inn Seaport Financial District. Not only did I get to concentrate on the northern parts of Manhattan (Times Square, Central Park, Museums etc) but I was then also able to thoroughly concentrate on the lower areas too at the end of my trip (Staten Island, Liberty Island, Brooklyn Bridge, etc). Best of all, we got both properties for a great price since we split up the days!

Need suggestion for hotel
by Dymphna1
I am coming into NYC on Amtrak - Penn Station and need to spend one night and leave to go out the next day from the LGA the next day. Any suggestions for a cheap hotel? I don't care about amenities. Just safe and clean.

Check for hostels - like on hostelworld or hostelbookers - I saw that there is a hostel in midtown, I believe...

Needing a hotel nearish to Penn Station myself, I looked on www.booking.com
Their reviews can only be posted by people who have booked through the site and completed their stay, so I consider them more trustworthy than those on sites which can be posted by anybody.
You don't have to book via booking.om, of course, but it will give you an idea of what's available.
Several VT-ers suggested the New Yorker to me (it's also listed on booking.com)

There are loads of inexpensive hotels, I just want to warn you against booking the Pennsylvania Hotel, which is across the street from Penn Station. It's going to be torn down, but until that happens it's still open for business, even though no repairs have been made. It was bad enough before that, now it's awful.
If you'll be leaving from LGA though, you should be staying on the east side instead of the Penn Station area. If you want dirt cheap, the Vanderbilt YMCA is recommended. But before you book that, check the UN Plaza Hotel. They frequently run great sales, so read up on hotwire and priceline. It's a great hotel with fabulous views, even a pool. The location is the tiniest bit out of the way because it's on 1st Ave., so a 10-minute walk to the subway. That's why bargains can be had. LGA is less than 30 minutes away.

Glad you said something about that hotel. I had looked at it, but was not real keen on sharing a room with how many people? Besides my gut was yelling "NO." lol. I will check out the others.

The YMCA is a good idea but they book up fast for obvious reasons - so dont wait!

There is a small, clean, safe hotel called The Pod on 51st between 3rd and 2nd. It has small rooms (think ship cabins) and appropriate prices. 230 East 51st Street, New York, NY 10022 (212) 355-0300 thepodhotel.com It is really easy to get to LGA from the east side there and there are lots of reasonably priced restaurants and pubs in a 1-2 block radius.

Or go the diner route - they are cool, fun, and provide lots of calories for your cash....

You gotta do everything more...
by Dick_Loudon
You gotta do everything more than once--eat, visit museums, shop, take lots of pix, ride the subway, go to a major sporting event to see real FANatics, eat some more, shop some more, sightsee till you drop. Spending the early part of my life there. The food, the stores, just the memory of walking down a manhattan street in the autumn. Hot corned beef in a deli; hot pretzels outside the Museum of Natural History; the feel of autumn and the sight of multicolored foliage around Central Park; playing stickball, boxball, touch football with friends; falling over backwards while trying to see the top of the Empire State Building; spending hours and hours in museums of every size, shape, and interest.
New York City Tip

Growing up in Brooklyn I'll never forget as a little boy looking out the window from my tenament building how these two new buildings just kept growing. They grew past the Empire State Building that other building that King Kong climbed I thought to myself. I must of been around 7 years old. Then one day my teacher announced that we where going on a class trip to the top of the Twin Towers. Thats how we New Yorkers called it.
LOOK UP!
by TexasDave
Especially in the area around Central Park, take some time to look at the top floor, or penthouses, of the apartment buildings. Many are quite ornate and there is a lot of architecture to admire up there. Of course, the trick is to do so discretely, so as not to look like a country bumpkin who just fell off the turnip truck!
The penthouse I've posted as an example is right across the street from Trump Tower, 5th Ave, South of Central Park.
By the same token, sometimes you an see amazing artistry where you least expect it. The second photo is of an apartment building on the Lower East Side. Look at all the detail that went into the building's facade. They just don't make them like that anymore!

A: "That's the price I paid on my last trip to NYC. Sunday's are usually lighter, but you never can count on a quick trip from JFK to down town."
