Mundane NYC question about Target in Harlem
by moodyjules
Hello New Yorkers.
My son will be a student at Columbia in two weeks. Much to my delight, a Target has been built at 117th near FDR Drive. Of course I know that Columbia is in , or at leat on the outskirts of Harlem and that Harlem has been vastly improved in terms of safety over the years, but there are supposedly still pockets in the area to avoid. Does anyone know about this Target and its safety? Of course it's a total natural for kids (and parents at move-in) to stock up on school essentials. Thanks, and sorry if this is a silly question - we live in Los Angeles and are not familiar with the nuances of New York.
JM
I don't belive I just wrote a paragraph asking about Target ... yikes.

The same could be said for Rodeo Drive these days or even Hollywood in general. NYC is a favorite visit for us and we've never even thought about some of what we might be getting into. Common sense is the key... IE we don't walk through the Park after dark but I've walked Harlem after dark and not had any issues. It's like walking the "tenderloin" in San Francisco. That's actually part of the Theater District. Same is true in Boston. The "shopping district" is/was right next to the most notorious "seedy" section. Like any big city just watch what you are doing and if something seems suspicious or out of your comfort zone, move on.

Brooklyn Lager....ROCKS!
by Bela_LUng
Brooklyn Brewery makes a bunch of beers and they are awesome. My room mates and I drank a lot of this beer while in town. We in fact drank a keg of it at one bar. Ran the tap dry. OH YEAH!
Damm good lager, pilsner and pennant ale. Wee! Brewery is in Williamsburg (Brooklyn) and does tours.
DRINK BROOKLYN BREWERY BEERS DAMNIT! Getting really fscking drunk all the time.
Put all assumptions aside

So you've decided you want to go see the big Apple and now you're telling everyone, and they're telling you everything they know about the city. And I don't think I have to list the things they're telling you.
Please all I ask of you is to enjoy the city as if it was completely new to you in every way. No assumptions, no precautions, no worries. Experience every part of it without thinking in the back of your head that you're going to get mobbed or pick pocketed or whistled at. Because like in every large city in the world, these things might occur. New York through the eyes of some people might have a bad reputation, try building your own opinion.
Do everything you can. It's...

Do everything you can. It's nonstop excitement and adventure. New York has balls! Going on my first trip away from home to NYU when I was just a 17 year old baby. I was so naive. Boy, did I learn fast.
Steamy streets.
by a5floor
While walking through NYC, you will notice that there will be steam coming out of the streets. This steam is coming from under the ground. The Subway needs to cool down. Water is cooling it down. When cold meets hot....

A: "That's the price I paid on my last trip to NYC. Sunday's are usually lighter, but you never can count on a quick trip from JFK to down town."
