And all that Jazz

Small and tightly compressed rooms with lots of people yet the cheapest available you will find in New York this was comfy enough. In a good location on 57th Street.

35 for 6 bed dorms,
40 for 4 bed and
45 each pp for a double (ie 90 per night for a couple) approximately...

It is a good place to stay, just dont expect too much atmosphere or extras. Mind you, the downstairs concierge for both Jazz and Habitat hotels is really great and very helpful.

Unique Quality: Views from the 17th floor of the Chrystler Building, tv room, internet facilities (but not so cheap $1 for 10 min).

close to all the action

nice hostel close to the middle of Manhattan. No hostel in NEw York is going to be cheap or right Downtown. This one however isn't to far or to expensive. The atmoshere didnt really exist, fellow backpackers kept to themselves and the common areas weren't well visited. the free breakfast also wasn't really anything to brag about.

Unique Quality: close to town as possible, nice jazz club downstairs

looking for a decent hotel/hostel in manhattan

by hamburgian

hey guys, i hope someone can help me out...

i'm looking for a hostel or hotel in nyc:

- manhattan if possible
- max.100-200 dollars per night for a double room incl. tourist fees
- cleanliness is my main concern
- toilets in the room

i've been looking around a lot but we never went to nyc so im a bit lost right now.
i know hotels in nyc are quite expensive and i dont expect a big fancy hotel for the price we are willing to pay. but we want to stay in manhattan and dont want to end up in a bed-bugged place or in a bad area.
we dont mind if the rooms are a bit small, we dont need a fancy breakfast and we dont need no real extras like spa, tv or stuff like that, we just want a decent place too sleep in a nice area.

is there someone that can help?

thanks in advance

Here are links to tripadvisor's pages on the most popular and well regarded hostels. Scroll through to read reviews. And look on the right side of the page, where you'll find a link to Photos posted by reviewers, which give you a better idea of what the place looks like than on their own web sites.

When I visited NY a couple of years ago I stayed over the river in Union City, New Jersey which is only 20 minutes to and from downtown Manhattan by public transport. NJ Hotels are about half the price of those of a similar standard in Manhattan.

Try www.booking.com for hotels and www.njtransit.com for transport options.

Rooms in NYC can be found on Hot Wire.com be sure to get three stars and above. You would not know the location, but it indicates the area you will stay. I booked one in mid-town with 3 stars for 139USD and it turned out to be the Sheration. Another cheaper route is Jazz Hostel in NYC , they have three locations there. Google it and you will find the web site, they are clean and under 100 USD. Good Luck Cheers Tommy x

The Wolcott Hotel (wolcott.com) is close to the Empire State Building and has reasonable room rates. It's an older hotel but the rooms are clean and large by NY standards, with ensuite bathrooms. The free coffee and muffins in the lobby each morning is a nice touch too :)
