If it's a short stay, just ask your hotel conceriege, maybe the hotel has a deal with gyms nearby?

You asked for the best! Here it is. The New York Atheletic Club. Hard pressed to find a better one, - or one with as much history behind it.......d:o)

Not sure if you could just walk in to a gym to walk out unless you are a member. Hotel gym would be the best bet.
If you are into walking or running, go to Central park. You'll have a great workout while enjoying the city.

Probably Chelsea Piers--here's the link:

Chelsea Piers is pretty darn cool but it'll cost you a few hundred dollars a month if you're not a yearly member and there's only the 1 location (Chelsea Piers).

What about Equinox? I'm sure gyms will give you a one day pass for free.
Travel Tips for New York City
From JFK airport
by albert34
The cheaper way to go out is by air train up to Jamaica subway stop(if you go to central or Nord Manhattan) or to Howard Beach(to South Manhattan).Once you leave the air train if you are going to spend more than 4 days in N.Y. you should buy a Seven-Day unlimited ride metrocard. The last day and if you are not in a hurry you can come back to the airport by the bus Q 3 (It lasts more than 1 hour from the 169 street subway stop in Queens).I got a Brooklyn ,Queens and Manhattan bus map in the N.Y.Public Library.
World Financial Center Building
by jessicadf
Johnzane and I did shopping day where we started at Century 21 and walked and walked and walked. We were intrigued by the windows of a building across the way from Century 21, so we headed in that direction after shopping there. Turns out it's the World Financial Center building. Great atrium, eh?
New York City Tip

Spending time with friends:
Staying with Candy up near Columbia...chilling out with her room mates...checking out all of the fantastic vegetarian food available there...
Staying with Will...appreciating what living in a frat house is REALLY like...seeing NYU's business school...walking FOREVER to Battery Park...and back...
Seeing Fen Yee for the first time in over 10 years...and knowing that she's still 'my girl' Hoping that we will finally be able to live in the same city one day!
An evening with Laurence...and my first glimpse of Harlem...what a COOL place...going to Jimmy's and realizing that so much of the music that I love has its origins in New York...
An afternoon with Perry...and doing the law school thing...meeting other law students...and finding that we're not all THAT different...even if we're from different countries...and other sides of the continent...
Climb to the top of the World...

Climb to the top of the World trade centre at sunset, Visit the top of the empire state building at night. Take the ferry to liberty island. Seeing the sunset at the top of the empire state building, skating in central park, seeing New York City dressed for Christmas
Best Deal in the City

Why pay the admittance fees of the Liberty Island tour and then not get to go up in the statue of Liberty? See the statue up close and FREE by taking the Staten Island Ferry from the city to Staten Island. You get a relaxing 20 minute ride, disembark, time to check out the new acquariums at the SI terminal, then board the next ferry back to the city. Day or night, a pass by Lady Liberty is a must do!
UPDATE: Well, guess what? They finally opened the statue of Liberty again this year (2009) and now visitors to the island CAN go up into the crown! Still don't think it's worth the cost of admission, and the interior is cramped and there's all those steps to climb, but if you want to do it (and I did, back in 1988) now you can.

Q: JFK to Morningside Heights "I am arriving at JFK on July 1st (a sunday) around 11 am. Since I'll be alone and with a fair amount of luggage, I was thinking..."
A: "That's the price I paid on my last trip to NYC. Sunday's are usually lighter, but you never can count on a quick trip from JFK to down town."
