Metro from JFK to Harlem
by kwipex
Hi, does anyone know how long it will take to travel via subway 'A' Train from JFK to 125th St in Harlem?
Also, how much has Harlem become safer over the years? I've heard of gentrification happening, but is it safe to walk about and ride the subway in Harlem at night?
Thanks.

The trip by subway should take a bit over an hour. An easeier way is to take the E train through Queens to 42nd Street and 8th Avenue switch to the uptown side of the platform and take the A Train to Harlem.
As for safety, tough call since it would depend on where you are going to walk and who is going to be in the area.

travel time will depend at least in part where on 125 St you wish to be, that is on the east side or the west side. best bet is about 90 minutes.
you will save time using the airtrain to the e train to an uptown train of your choice after the e train enters manhattan -- as opposed to using the a train from howard beach which is a very very long ride.
there is no question that harlem is much safer than it used to be, the question is whether it is safe enough.

Thanks Gabesz and Nicolaitan.
Can I change for an uptown train into Harlem at 50 st and 8th Ave? The Subway map shows a black dot which is listed as 'local service only' in the legend?
I'll take this E train and then change for an A train to Harlem West (i'm getting off at 125th St). Would you be able to advise how long this total ride will take?
Thanks again very much - I really appreciate the answers.

okay - air train to etrain, you apparently know all this stuff. take etrain to 7th Avenue station and switch to D train UPTOWN - i have not been in this station for a few years, check the signs, the uptown d may be on the same or a different level but will be going in the same direction as the train you got off. take the d train direct to 125th and 8th avenue. allowing for waiting for a train to arrive, 90 minutes.

That 7th Ave. subway station is quirky. Not only are there two levels, but trains going in the same direction come into the station in opposite directions. So pay attention to the signs and make sure you're going in the right direction. You're going to want the Uptown D.
By the way, I hope you're staying either with friends or in a legitimate hotel. There are a lot of scams out there, and the city is cracking down on illegal apartment rentals. You don't want to end up on the street.

The A Train does not stop at 50th Street. It stops at 42nd and 59th Streets.
D Train does not goo to 8th Avenue and 125th Street.
Re: Metro from JFK to Harlem

the d train does most certainly stop at 125 st and eighth avenue, known locally at st nicholas ave or some such. and nowhere is it stated that the a train stops at 7th avenue.

10028, Gabesz, Nicolaitan,
Thank you all very much for all the tips. I have a clear picture of where I'm heading to now, and the subway stops are understandable now.
Cheers!

Travel Tips for New York City
Cheap ways to enjoy NYC

Don't forget your combined citypass and metro pass for the week. It knocks a lot off the entrance fees for all the attractions and allows you unlimited travel on the subway (the very best way to get around, although there are lots of steps, maybe not so good for the parents). It's a good idea to buy online (we picked ours up from the Hard Rock Cafe) so you get a good deal. You also do not have to stand in line, the ticket tells you where to go to get in faster.
As for food, opposite Penn Station (near the New Yorker Ramada hotel) there was a lean against the rail hot dog street bar, 75c a dog. Incredibly cheap but not spotless. The other end of the scale was a $40 per person full breakfast in a fancy restaurant.
I'd get a sandwich from a deli plus a drink and have my lunch on a bench near Battery Park. New Yorkers often eat lunch in a park outside, it's fine as long as you don't drink alcohol outside.

Lots of ice cream places for a sugar fix. Whatever you do, don't have one of those *wraps*. The two I had (different locations) tasted like cardboard. Oh, if you want to shop, take your passport to the customer services desk at Macy's and you can get a discount card. International shoppers can get a discount card good for 11% off most purchases at the Visitor's Center.

With dollar at $1.50 for £1 and the 11% discount, you can't really go wrong.
Transportation

New York is best traversed by foot. Taking cabs in midtown is the worst way to move around because crosstown traffic is a drag. You can see everything on hoof and you are free to move about the sidewalks, which themselves are crowded during peak tourist times. Do not try to drive between Halloween and New Year's Day. Do not try to stand in Times Square at any time. Central Park ... I've had a life time of memories in New York. Every ride on the Staten Island Ferry is a treat. A visit to Coney Island as a kid was the greatest fun. Riding the el out to Shea Stadium is great. Being at a Yankees post-season victory is unmatched.
Celebrities are all over the city. Sightings of anyone can take place nearly any time.

Take in the vibrancy and energy of the City at every turn. Look up at the architecture (Chrysler Building, Flatiron, Woolworth, New York Life, and countless others). See the ballet at Lincoln Center if in season. Take in the Nutcracker at Xmas time. All of them... well except for one (9/11).

Go down to Central Park on a Sunday morning...!! Walking through the park and just shooting the breeze is the best way to spend a Sunday...! New Years Eve in Times Square, and a fantastic meal in Mr.Tangs on Mott Street in Chinatown..!

The main Puerto Rican Neighborhood in manhattan is El Barrio or Spanish Harlem, located on the east side between 103rd St and 116th St.
Here you will find Puerto Rican delies, restauants, music and clothing stores. There is also 'El Museo del Barrio', the De la Vega studio, and quite a few murals, most of which were painted by -----> De la Vega, a Puerto Rican artist, based in El Barrio.
During the summer there are usually block parties and barbecues going on in one place or another, and you occasionly still see old men riding those big cruiser bicycles (which always have a PR flag flying from somewhere).
Puerto Ricans are very patriotic, and they go crazy at the PR day parade each year which is baisically one big street party. The parade is on the second sunday of june, and marches up Fifth Avenue from 44th to 86th streets.
I have yet to meet a Puerto Rican who doesn't speak english, so non spanish speakers are good there. for anyone who does speak spanish, unless you are used to the carribean style, you might be better off in english! Adresses:
