I went by myself last month. I had a great time! I felt very comfortable on my own. I used the subway w/o any problems. It was very cold but spent lots of time outside anyway.

Sorry I can't join you but I have to work sometime.

Contact Big Apple Greeter. "Greeters" are volunteer New Yorkers who love showing off their neighborhoods for free. There are more requests than there are Greeters, but give it a try, you might get lucky.

Even if you don't get a Greeter, the web site has loads of great info, including neighborhood guides.

Wave Hello!

There are various webcams around Times Square, but the one at the 47th St Digital Store is only 10 feet above the pavement, so the people on line can have a clear view of what's happening. There are phone boxes right beside it, so it's good fun to ring home, tell them to log on and they can see you! If you're lucky, they'll print and save the screen so you can see it when you get home. Try it, it's fun!http://www.earthcam.com/usa/newyork/timessquare/livefridays.html

The Empire State building is amazing, but try to do it on a weekday. Also check out the Staten Island Ferry and Central Park. The best thing to do is just walk around and don't be afraid! Just use common sense. If you have time and it's warm out, go to Coney Island. It's just a subway ride away. See the freak show and have some fried clams. Pictured here is the famous Wonder Wheel at Coney Island. I love how insane the people are. They make me laugh every single day.

Explore Central Park - you'll be amazed at the natural world you'll discover if you spend some time in the park. The best thing about New York is opportunity the city presents to all. Anything and everything you could possibly desire can be found in New York - you simply have to know where to find it. There's no place like Central Park in Spring...

New York, New York...Its up to you...New York

As the plane overflies the city, its beauty can leave you speachless! Each neighborhood has its charm.
As a graduate student in Columbia I usually hanged out and got familiar with the Morningside and Upper West neighborhoods. We once walked all the way downtown from Broadway from 116th to E 72nd. There are many shops, specially below 110th that are very inexpensive. I miss the whole experience of being in New York. Studying in Columbia is one of the best times in my life. Each building inside Morningside campus is beautiful. Specially the Low Library , but be sure to explore the Chapel. next door.
