21 & 22 year old visiting New York City: Questions!

by Mactm

Hello readers,

Me and a friend are heading over to NYC in early September and we Intend to do all the cliché touristy stuff such ads Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty etc..

We also intend to go out most nights, have a nice meal and a few drinks then *hit the town* some might say. What I am wondering is if their are any good nightclubs for us to visit, keeping in mind that I don't intend on paying ridiculous prices for drinks.

Somewhere with some sort of drinks promotions of some sort but still offers a nice place to go and meet people (Not Run-down)

If anyone could enlighten us on such a venue I would be mostt grateful.

Cheers
James

P.S Staying in Manhattan area.

You wont have any problems finding nice bars full of friendly people all over Manhattan.

I'm from Australia so thought all the drinks were pretty cheap and of course there are happy hours. If you are hanging out in the Times Square vicinity you may be handed promotional material about different bars in the area.

Make sure you do all the "cliche touristy stuff". You will be amazed at how much you enjoy seeing all the sights you have heard so much about. Being in New York makes it all real and I would go back there in a heartbeat.

Check CJG1's pages for NYC places to go. I'd avoid Times Square other than to wander through the crowds and get some photos. It's VERY touristy with prices to match.

Travel Tips for New York City

The Aircraftcarrier Intrepid + Concorde

by EdinburghRoc

Near-by ocean ships dock including the QE2.
Concorde can be entered also.
Many planes from around the world can be seen on the flight deck.

You do get to visit the Bridge.

Lots to see inside. Near the Intrepid you can catch a trip around Manhattan its included on your city-pass.
Tip do both on the one day while you are there.

Maybe green and red, maybe blue and white...

The top of the cool Empire State Bldg glows with the colors of the season, maybe you know the holidays and special events being celebrated, maybe you don't, but it's always nice to see the different colors against the night sky...

Have a walk at Central Park

by hamouras

Have a walk at Central Park The Central Park is the biggest park in Manhattan. It is located just in the heart of the island, between two avenues and two streets!?! You can't miss it.
A lot of New Yorkers come here (or at least they used to) for a walk, some jogging, a picnic, play some sports, etc. Also a lot of police detectives come here undercover (usually reading newspapers while wearing sunglasses in the middle of the night) to observe the exchange of suitcases, usually containing ransom money for someone's son or daughter. I guess i should stop watching so many movies.
No really, the Central Park is a lovely spot. It was my first impression of New York and it was great. Me and my sister used to come here every day near lunchtime to eat a snack and relax.

From the Ellis Island Ferry

by grandmaR

Although seeing New York skyline was not a goal, if you look around you when you ride the ferry, you WILL see it.

Of course the twin towers of the World Trade Center are no longer there, but since I was never in NYC when they were there, I did not miss them.

Because New York geography is not that familiar to me, I'm really not sure if my pictures are of New York or Brooklyn or what the buildings are. I think the tall buildings that one might see include the Chrysler building, the Empire State building, and possibly One Chase Manhattan Plaza, the Standard Oil Building and the American International Building. The last picture is from the NPS movie about immigration to Ellis Island - what the immigrants would have seen.

SOuth of HOuston

Soho is a small neighborhood south of Houston. I read that it's famous for its cast-iron buildings so I went to take a look. I picked the building with the most photogenic cast-iron and took the photo.
