Hi everyone,
We are going to New York this summer we are wondering if anyone can recomend a userfriendly, and up-to-date New York City map.
I have read about a map that that uses different color codes on buildings, shops and so on, anyone know the name of this...

People seem to like the Not For Tourists guidebooks, but really any decent guidebook will have maps -- Frommer's, Fodor's and the like. My suggestion is to take a look at where the book is published. I had picked up a really nice looking book with 3-D neighborhood maps, but when I started thumbing through I found lots of little mistakes and major omissions. Then I noticed the book was published in the UK -- and it appeared that the author didn't live here at all!
By the way, I've just found an excellent midtown Manhattan map on the web site of the new Rockefeller Center Hotel that's quite good --

Area surrounding Rockefeller Center
Which hotel if any provides a few of the Christmas tree and plaza from the rooms? I am going there for the first time this December and I want to get the hotel with the best view.

Try The Helmsley Palace Hotel. This is the only hotel near the Rock Center.

The tree is located in Rockefeller Plaza, which is between 5th and 6th Avenues. The New York Palace hotel (it hasn't been the Helmsley Palace since 1993) is located on Madison Ave., and does not have a view of the tree. I am pretty sure there aren't any hotels with windows that look out onto the Plaza itself, unfortunately. However, there are dozens of hotels in the immediate neighborhood (I have no idea why the previous poster would say that the Palace is the only one!) You will have to give some idea of the class of hotel you're looking for. On the east side of Midtown (that is, everything east of 5th Ave.) in that area, most of the hotels are very expensive and cater to the business/luxury crowd. The West Side will have some less expensive places, but even so, New York at Christmastime can never be considered cheap.

The brand new Rockefeller Center Hotel is the only one with a view of the tree.

My guess is that it'd be seriously expensive for the privelege! I think the best view of the tree is from the skating rink itself, at night. Fantastic.

I just noticed the new hotel in Rockefeller and it looks nice and great location. It is probably expensive but worth asking them!
