Bakeries
I don't know what it is about NYC, but the food here looks better than any place I've ever seen. It must have to do with the diversity of the culture. Just walking by a bakery case will get your mouth watering.

I am planning a suprise trip to new york for my hubby (we are from canada) i have tixs for a giants game, on sunday nov 28.. we will arrive at noon on the friday before...so we only have half a day friday and all day saturday for new york city and want to make best useof ourtime. i have read through some forums and know i want to go to grand central and check out the whispering gallerie near the oyster bar. i would like to do the empire state building, and eat at jekyll and hydes. if there is time moma is of interest and definatly central park. the hotel we are staying at is hotel 41 at times square, which is at 206 W 41st street. i guess i am curoius which things are near each other, and if i am missing any good sights that should be must sees for my list. what would be the best order to see these things to waste the least time. thanks in advance...love this forum!!
If time is tight I would recommend staying away from the MoMA only due to its size and you could easily be drawn in and wind up staying most of a day. One museum that is quite small and still very impressive is the Frick Collection (I have a tip about it on my NYC page).
Again, to maximize your time you shuld plan to see things that are close to each other. One good guidebook to help you do that is the Access Guide. You can get a previous edition, which is still good except for maybe the lists of restaurants and prices of things, quite cheaply on amazon or other website. It has the whole city divided into areas.
Across from Grand Central, for example, is the Chrysler Building so you can duck in there and see the lobby in 10 mins.
Hope that helps.
You might look into going to the Top of the Rock instead of the Empire State Building if you are going up for the view, it's been a couple of years since I've been but I was able to get a timed ticket for the Top of the Rock but not the Empire State Building which had a really long line. The ESB has an express pass but it's a whopping $45 compared to $20 if you wait in line. It looks like the timed ticket for the Top of the Rock is currently $21, $30 if you want to go up twice, once in the day and once at night.
I really liked the food at Carnegie Deli, what we did our 1st time was get a corned beef sandwich to go (they are enormous) and took it back to our hotel to eat. They don't let you share if you eat at a table and no human could possibly finish one of those sandwiches.
thanks guys for the quick response. checked our your page texasdave...awesome!!

New York City always has something going on to pique your interest. look in TimeOut, and you're bound to find some sort of festival somewhere with interesting people. This was at the HOWL festival in August. Politics, or art, or whatever, New Yorkers love to get involved in current events. And they're not afraid to talk about it. This was a demonstration against Israel's occupation of Palestine. not a light topic, but a very interesting topic, and handled very well.
Visit Ellis Island, climb the Statue of Liberty (elevator is no fun!) and see the museum there. Also, boat around Manhattan is pretty fun. If you get a chance, go watch something at Broadway. Seeing New York City from Lady Liberty's crown as well as Times Square at night. Such a lively city. Definitely, the city that never sleeps.
You have to go to TIMES SQUARE at night!!..
It's BEAUTIFUL and exciting!, to Central Park which is the biggest (not sure if it's the only!) park in Manhattan, to the Empire State, Ellis Island, Statu of Liberty of course, Broadway, SOOO many things!! you'll never get bored! In NYC there is people from everywhere... i think that's what i miss the most.. meeting so many different people every single day and learning a part their cultures. All in the same spot.
Have an 'egg creme' drink. If it's not on the menu, just ask for it. They will probably make it for you anyway. You can get chocolate or vanilla. They have the best delicatessens in the world. There are at least two on every block.
You won't see this photo too often - bikes riding down the FDR!

Q: JFK to Morningside Heights "I am arriving at JFK on July 1st (a sunday) around 11 am. Since I'll be alone and with a fair amount of luggage, I was thinking..."
A: "That's the price I paid on my last trip to NYC. Sunday's are usually lighter, but you never can count on a quick trip from JFK to down town."
