very convenient and comfortable

This hotel was great for me, in a perfect location near Union Square/East Village and the trains. All amenities including wi-fi (you can pick up a free signal from another place, otherwise you have to pay). Not too expensive considering it's NYC. Nice staff, decent breakfasts. My only complaint is they didn't turn the heat on at night, but most places in NY wait until the heart of winter to turn them on. Some of the rooms are really small so ask to see a different one if you aren't satisfied.

Ok location

This hotel, again, was small, but it was good. Clean rooms, good service. It's a few blocks away from Union Square itself, but I was attending a conference downtown and it was a central location...to the village, Soho and also uptown. Would recommend. I stayed there myself without a problem.

More about Union Square Inn

great experience, awesome location for union square inn

by TripAdvisor Member RaeFortCollins

i stayed at union square inn for two nights last week and loved it. it was very clean and the bathroom was very new and modern, there was cable TV and private phone in the room as well. the walls were a bit thin, as i could hear quite well the gentleman next door talking in his sleep and the love marathon down the hall. what i liked best, though, was the location: literally five steps out the door was the entry to the L line of the subway, and across the street was a cool english style pub called the kings head tavern (or something like that). the neighborhood had lots to offer in the way of cheap eats and shopping. the complimentary muffin/coffee breakfast was nice too, in the coffee shop next to the lobby. i would definitely stay here again in a heartbeat.

union square jewel

i stayed in the union square inn in november with a friend when in new york for a shopping holiday. Although the room was small and we were on the fifth floor of the hotel which has no lift i would definately recommend this hotel to others who are looking for a base from which to explore this fantastic city! the breakfast was a welcome start to the day every morning and the cafe was small but welcoming, the hotel is close to a subway station which makes it a good location for getting out and about and the farmers market which is held in union square is definately worth a look!

Small and basic but good value

by TripAdvisor Member scn

The Union Square Inn is ideal for people who want a good standard of accommodation at a reasonable price. One of the cheaper hotels in the city, the Union Square Inn is small and basic, but clean and perfectly adequate. The room I had was rather small, and a little dark (as it was on the side of the building) but was clean. The bathroom was also very clean. The staff were helpful. Also included is a 'complimentary' breakfast of Bagel/coffee. The hotel is in a good location too. If you're looking for cheaper-end accommodation, you could certainly do a lot worse than stay here!

Wonderful!

Myself and my sister stayed at the Union Square Inn at the end of Nov 2004. What a find! The staff were friendly and helpful and the room was perfect for our needs. We booked a standard room - it was like a bedroom - not too big and not too small. had a tv and some drawers but no wardrobe. There was a small rail in the room where you could hang coats etc. The bathroom was large and modern. The accomodation was clean. The room cost $99 (week days) and $129 (weekend) and breakfast was included - either a cream cheese bagel or a huge muffin. Excellent value for money.

The subway is a 1 min walk away and there is also some good shops about 2 mins away in Union Square.

Clean, Pleasant Hotel; Wonderful Stay!

by A TripAdvisor Member

Note to travellers: The Union Square Inn is a budget hotel. The rooms are small. It is a walk-up. Certain amentities are not perfect (hairdryers were only available upon request, and I was unable to just use one for my entire stay). The staff are not at your beck and call. But these are the only negatives about this hotel. I stayed here on my own for three weeks, and enjoyed every minute. The room was clean and neat, the staff were friendly. I felt safe all the time. The location is brilliant -- in between midtown and downtown, two blocks from a main subway station that'll take you directly to Times Square or down to Canal Street for some shopping. I would recommend this hotel to anyone who asked about it, and will most likely stay here again.

Get a Room at the Back!!

The Union Square Inn is a decent, small place which is well located just east of -you guessed it- Union Square on 14th Street. The rates are reasonable. I paid an average of $132/night in mid-May for a "superior double" room with bathroom. I was expecting a tiny room based on previous reviews, but it wasn't bad.

On the positive side: the price; daily cleaning by housekeeping, including fresh towels; small coffee and muffin or bagel for breakfast included in price.

On the minus side: this was the *loudest* hotel room I have ever stayed in! Major emphasis here! It felt like the bed was in the middle of 14th Street (a very busy street with lots of trucks and buses). The windows hardly kept out the noise. Make sure that if you don't like lots and lots of heavy noise that you ask for a room not facing 14th Street (of which there are many)! I bought some foam earplugs which worked quite well... but still..

I also found the remains of a very large dead fly squashed on to one of the windows, and filled in one of the housekeeping forms provided asking them to clean the window. 2 days later, the fly was still there. Very gross.

Bathroom was clean and shower worked well.

Generally the hotel was clean and well-run. They had a good system for leaving/retrieving left luggage. Again, for the price the hotel was good. I don't think I'll be back to this particular place (my ears are still ringing) but liked the area and will probably stay nearby next time.

Great little value hotel

We were two South African travellers who stayed at the Inn for two nights en route to Boston. While the room was fairly modest, we found it to be clean and comfortable. The hotel is well situated being, as it is, just off Union square.

The service is freindly and efficient.

The facility whereby complimentary refreshments are provided daily in the lounge adjacent to each floor is terrific - we met several US travellers there in the evenings before going out to dinner and enjoyed their company and conversation immensely.

Dollar for dollar, this must be one of the best buys I've had the good fortune to come across. This is particularly important for anyone travelling on a weak currency. I have no hesitation in recommending the establishment.

Would not stay here again

by TripAdvisor Member jmatrun

The room was somewhat clean (clean floors and bathrooms, linens were disgusting), but for the price, I figured I got what I paid for.

The GOOD:
The location is fantastic - subway, restaurants and shopping are all within a 2-5 minute walk. The bathroom was actually pretty clean and somewhat large (huge considering the size of the room).

The BAD:
The hallway of the hotel stunk (really badly), I found a couple of roaches in my room, the bed linens were old, dirty and didnt even cover the entire mattress. I did not trust to leave my clothes in/on any of the furniture for fear of bringing roaches home with me. The hotel thinks its acceptable to leave garbage bags stored at the end of hallways for days on end (my room was at the end of the 2nd floor hallway) - I wonder why I found roaches in my room?!?!?!?

Overall, it was a cheap place to crash, but would I stay there again? Absolutely not. Spend a few more bucks and get yourself a decent place.

Accomodation for a Single Guy

by JPA170478

Hi will be travelling by myself to New york next year for about 5 nights and would appreciate any accomodation suggestions you could offer?

As I plan to spend most of my time out of the accomodation and exploring New York, I am not looking for luxury a 2/3 star place would be fine, something about $100 a night. I think location will probably be more important based on my previous travelling experience.

Regards

Justin

Hi Justin,

You might want to check out the Union Square Inn:

http://www.unionsquareinn.com/index.html

It's a cute little boutique hotel in a great location in Greenwich Village and right near NYU.

I stayed there once before and the rooms were comfortable and I really liked the location.

Right now they offer rates for about $109, so perhaps you can check out what they'd be offering next year. Maybe shop around on the net to see if any of the other sites might offer a special rate here.

Have fun!
