The YMCA Vanderbilt has a great location, the rooms are basic and small, but they are clean and you can use the pool and other facilities if you show your hotel keycard. The restaurant is reasonable and the food ok - good for breakfast. Security is great, and they have a store-room to leave your luggage in while you explore more of New York on your last day. Airport transfers leave right outside every 2 hours, for less than 20 dollars. However, my stay coincided with 2 huge german tour groups of schoolkids and lots of university students treating the place like a dorm. The noise at night was truly unbelievable. The booking staff seemed to have placed everyone on my floor, and I soon realised the showers and toilets 2 floors down were deserted and a lot cleaner!! I had to ask the guys next door to be quiet twice, then finally had to fetch security. I was assured someone would speak to them for the next night, but if anything they were worse, banging on the wall and leaving beer bottles and rubbish propped up against my door. I spoke to several other guests who were also fed up with this. I think the Y needs to realise that placing individual travellers in the midst of rowdy groups isn't a great idea.
A pool onsite is great, the staff are friendly, and you get a real sense of how much the community benefits from the Y, with the lobby busy all day with children, teenagers and office workers using the facilities. There's also a 24 hour internet shop at 47th and 3rd, literally less than a minute from the front door. 1) great location in east midtown, easy access to virtually all of manhattan's sights. 2) reasonable rates 3) cheap 'international' cafe with a nice atmosphere 4)very international feel to the place;-guests must be from outside new york (outer state or overseas) 5) superb sports facilities (machine & free weights gym, indoor running track, basketball court, aerobics classes, 2 swiming pools)- all free to guests!
