Forget it

The location is good, but it ends there. The staff at the desk are ubeleivably rude and unreasonable, the rooms are so tiny you cant come home and relax, you can just ly in your bunk as there is no room. Not very nice to come home to after touring this beautiful city, it really spolt our time there, and we were trapped, no late rooms at other hotels once you find out how bad this place is. Better spend some more and look elsewhere, subways are good. Many people check out early, what a windfall for this dump. Please consider my concerns, I am not that fussy, you've been warned

Unique Quality: The location is what gives this dump the ratings

a nice nyc surprise!!!

i had a family reunion w/ my 2 sisters & sister-in-law 10/04 - 10/07/09. 3 seniors and an almost senior on the loose in nyc. the vanderbilt is a great bargin, has no frills but very secure & has a great friendly staff.
my sisters and i came in on the metro north and could easily walk from grand central to the vanderbilt. my sister-in-law came in by car and had no problem finding parking. she gave us a one night/day guided tour of nyc. the next two nights & days we 3 were on our own. we felt safe walking around at night, a short walk up to rockerfeller center. the un is near by. best part of the vanderbilt .......the many young people staying there from a multitude of foreign countries. everyone was very friendly, respectful & quite.
the hostel is a clean barebones place to stay, with a choice of a single room or bunk room with up & down beds. the rooms are small but you have all your basic needs. the bathrooms are on the outer corridors. mens on one side and ladies on the other side. there is a shower room with two showers and a bathroom with a shower & two stall toilets (at least there is in the ladies!).
yes i would recommend it and would even stay by myself there. no i wouldn't recommend it if you are the type that need a privet bathroom, & expect room service ........ won't happen there! There are wonderful parks, places to shop & eat all around the area, walk around the surrounding blocks, explore! Some eateries in the area deliver to the vanderbilt too.

Unique Quality: cost! location! what you get for your money! security! friendly hard working staff! very clean!!

The cheapest and convenient place to stay

My friend came to New York during the New Year. It was high season for New York, I was lucky to be able to find a room for her at YMCA Vanderbilt. The room is incredible tiny with no private bath or shower. There is no room service during your stay also.
However, we liked its location. It's at 47th street between 2nd and 3nd Avenue. It's less than two blocks from UN and a few blocks from 5th Ave. For its location, I think the rate is OK. The price we paid was $108 per day for a single room including tax. Since I had called many other hotels so I can say the price was very reasonable for its location and the time peroid. Another surprise is it not only has a TV in room, but also it's a TV/DVD combo, so you can watch DVD there. There is also a large gym in first floor.

Unique Quality: Great location, reasonable price

Cheap, convenient, clean but noisy

The YMCA Vanderbilt has a great location, the rooms are basic and small, but they are clean and you can use the pool and other facilities if you show your hotel keycard. The restaurant is reasonable and the food ok - good for breakfast. Security is great, and they have a store-room to leave your luggage in while you explore more of New York on your last day. Airport transfers leave right outside every 2 hours, for less than 20 dollars. However, my stay coincided with 2 huge german tour groups of schoolkids and lots of university students treating the place like a dorm. The noise at night was truly unbelievable. The booking staff seemed to have placed everyone on my floor, and I soon realised the showers and toilets 2 floors down were deserted and a lot cleaner!! I had to ask the guys next door to be quiet twice, then finally had to fetch security. I was assured someone would speak to them for the next night, but if anything they were worse, banging on the wall and leaving beer bottles and rubbish propped up against my door. I spoke to several other guests who were also fed up with this. I think the Y needs to realise that placing individual travellers in the midst of rowdy groups isn't a great idea.

Unique Quality: A pool onsite is great, the staff are friendly, and you get a real sense of how much the community benefits from the Y, with the lobby busy all day with children, teenagers and office workers using the facilities. There's also a 24 hour internet shop at 47th and 3rd, literally less than a minute from the front door.

Hostelling

My brother and I stayed here for a few days in the summer while waiting to move apartment. It's relatively cheap but the rooms are tiny. The only consolation was that in the smallest room I've ever stayed in we had one of the biggest TVs I've ever had - only in America :-)

Unique Quality: Guests have the use of the Vanderbilt gym and swimming pool.

Vanderbilt YMCA

Unique Quality: 1) great location in east midtown, easy access to virtually all of manhattan's sights.
2) reasonable rates
3) cheap 'international' cafe with a nice atmosphere
4)very international feel to the place;-guests must be from outside new york (outer state or overseas)
5) superb sports facilities (machine & free weights gym, indoor running track, basketball court, aerobics classes, 2 swiming pools)- all free to guests!

More about Vanderbilt Ymca

OK for one night

by A TripAdvisor Member

My daughter and I stayed at the Vanderbilt YMCA for one night in late July. The staff at the front desk were very friendy and helpful, as were the staff in the gym downstairs and the security staff. There was no problem with our reservation (made through the YMCA reservations website) and we paid with a credit card. We were able to use a safety deposit facility and luggage storage ($1 per bag).

As expected, the room was small and basic but clean. Our airconditioner was very noisy and not terribly effective. The bunks were a bit ricketty and I was glad my daughter, sleeping in the top bunk, is of a slight build!

The bathrooms on our floor were terrible - dirty toilets, broken showers and no privacy. Downstairs in the gym, however, the bathrooms were clean and nice, so we headed down there for our showers.

The location is great and for the price, it was fine for one night after a long trip from Australia.

Not bad compared to alot of New York Hostels

by A TripAdvisor Member

I stayed at the Vanderbilt YMCA last December and found it overall fairly decent. The rooms are very small and occasional can be a little cramp but not to bad as it has everything you need tv, bed, wardrobe etc. I always felt safe and secure as the doors have bolted locks and safty catches and the security officer always asks to see your card before going in the lifts so there are no unwated strangers hanging about. You have to shower in the bathroom that every has to share which is sometimes a pain but it was mostly empty when I went to shower in the mornings. Maids tidy your room every other day but make sure you hide your valuables when you go out as I heard one or two customers had stuff stolen. The best thing about it is the area, it is fairly quiet and secluded but still near all the tourist attractions like Times Square, Central Park etc and has restaurants, shops and bars all aorund. I do advise you if its your first time and you don't know your way around New York to get a cab to the Hotel as it took me 3 hours to find it on foot from the train station as the actual hotel is not in the Vanderbilt area which most people will direct you to if you ask people on the street. Anyway its a decent place to stay comparded to alot awful hostels I've stayed at in the past in New York City.

Vanderbilt YMCA & Hotel 17

by numaan

I have found accomodation and will stay four nights at the vanderbilt YMCA and then 4 nights at Hotel 17. Has anyone stayed at these places? Any ideas on what to expect? Let me know thanks!

I have no idea, but YMCAs can be touch and go. I normally get a chill down my spine when people consider it for accomodations. But perhaps I am revealing my bias.

Enjoy the Big Apple.
