The Tick Tock Diner is next door to the hotel.

I like the Tick Tock Diner, but the Skylight Diner is better and only a block away. It's on 34th St. between 9th-10th Aves. (closer to 9th Ave.).

I second the Skylight diner, but Tick Tock is right in the hotel and eggs are eggs....maybe they should go out and go for fresh bagel shops in the area instead. Cheers Tommy x

Really??? tick tock? Ok it's right there, i get it. I've "had" to eat there several times and for a diner, it's fine. But a little bit over priced and honestly? IT'S DINER FOOD! You're gonna be in NYC, i know you think it's a NYC thing to do but seriously... why not go to a great place for breakfast? don't go to a mediocre diner! Go downtown for chinese dim sum. Go elli's and get some great bread with your breakfast. IT'S NYC!

Some people like diner food (I am one of them) and consider the diner experience just as valid a New York experience as going to Ess-a-Bagel. You can't eat dim sum more than once in a trip, for sure, so what are you going to do on the rest of the days?

I don't have any favorites right near that hotel but I used to eat a lot at the Lyric (very standard-issue, 22nd and Third). It is nothing wildly special but it is a Manhattan diner that meets all the criteria.

It's the experience thing, I understand....go for it, my buddy drag me to one in Pennsyvania and it was horrible, and eggs are eggs, but he got it out of his system and the greesy spoon was for pepto bismol...the pink stuff. I think what most are saying is there is so much variety of places to eat that you picked a diner. The closest to a diner that I like is Katz's deli on Houston. It is worth the cab ride for a good pastriami and swiss or a bagel with your breakfast, It is a real insitution and it has been in the movies. (when Harry met Sally) it is over priced too, but I crave the meats at least twice a year. I live 300 miles away too, but use to grow up in the neighborhood there. cheers Tommy x

Cheers,
hopefully as we are there 6 days we can cram all of the recommended, saw Katz on the net looks good and the menu is extensive, I'm sure once ive had a couple of brecky's in diners I will be happy, its all part of my panned NY experience and we are gonna enjoy every second of it (indigestion and all). lol

Big thanks

Just back, "The Stage door" right next to the New Yorker this and the "Skylight" were favoured by us. Couple of days of pancakes, eggs, ham, sausage, bacon was enough for my stomach, last 4 days I went lighter, lol

New York Holidays - Top Tips

Walk over the Brooklyn Bridge and watch the sun setting over the famous Manhattan skyline.
Climb to the “Top of the Rock” – you can now go to the top of the Rockefeller Centre on 5th Avenue and enjoy a sensational view of Manhattan. It’s a better view than from the top of the Empire State Building as you can see Central Park and also the Empire State Building itself – less queuing too…
There’s a great outlet centre for shopping in New Jersey: Woodbury Common Premium Outlet Centre. Get a coach from the Port Authority Building in midtown – prices are amazing and all the top brands are there including Gap, Ralph Lauren, Nike etc.
Top department stores to visit are Macy’s, Saks 5th Avenue, & Bloomingdales.
Go to Dean & Deluca for a great cup of Italian coffee and cake. Their deli shop in Soho is amazing and a great place to buy a picnic lunch in the hot summer.
Stroll in Central Park like the locals on a Sunday – there are also some free guided walks and entertainment in the summer.
MOMA – the newly reopened Museum of Modern Art is a great place to visit due to its central location on 5th Avenue and amazing exhibitions.
Don’t pay for breakfast in your hotel – enjoy a traditional New York bagel and coffee at one of the many delis. Sushi is also really good value compared to the UK.
Nolita (north of little Italy) & Soho (South of Houston Street) are great areas for shopping and for good value restaurants.
From the airport take a yellow cab from the rank – it’s a fixed price to anywhere in Manhattan.
If a building has an arched entrance it means that you can walk through it (and avoid the crowds). Many skyscrapers have public areas where you can rest your weary limbs and enjoy some peace and quiet! The older buildings have amazing interiors (such as the French building and the Chrysler building).
Take the Staten Island ferry past the Statue of Liberty – it’s free!

Most people know about all the great sites, the Statue of Liberty , Times Square, Empire State Building, Broadway, Central Park, but it's wonderful also take the subway and go outside Manhattan. Queens,Bronx... why take the subway? Because is cheap :-) and you can feel like a N.Y. citizen I miss the WTC...

The Inimitable Times Square!

by paulapes

I love everything about Manhattan! It's sort of like being in Rome: millions of people, crazy traffic, and too much to see! One of the cool things was Times Square and all of those huge advertising boards and video signs--won't find any of those in Rhode Island :o) That's a pic of Times Square. Seeing the Metropolitan Museum of Art on 5th Avenue--then I REALLY know I'm in NYC.

Visit the Frick Museum (70th Street and Fifth Avenue) and see how the super-rich lived in the early 20th century. [$10] Enjoy the art, furniture and tranquil reflecting pool. Go to the Cooper-Hewitt,(Fifth Avenue at 91st Street), which was the home of Andrew Carnegie. Stunning building filled with interesting applied design exhibits. [$8; free Tuesdays 5PM-9PM] Great building lobbies. The Woolworth Building is a prime example. At 233 Broadway, near City Hall, this gothic temple to finance has dark wood carvings of F.W. Woolworth, the architect, and several others associated with this now-bankrupt American institution, the five-and-dime store. Built in 1913, it was then the world's tallest building, now the tallest in lower Manhattan.
The Chrysler Building (42nd Street on Lexington Avenue) has an Art deco lobby to match its famous stainless steel top. Lobby, recently refurbished, is a real treat.
