Last minute wedding: please help with hotel and place to eat.
by HenriettaStackpole
My brother is planning a last minute wedding, so in a few weeks he will be married at Niagara Falls. I am not familiar with the area, but I understand his ceremony will be on the NY side in or near Prospect Point. We would like a place, hopefully within walking distance for the immediate family to stay. It doesn't need to be fancy but clean and nice. My brother had heard of the Red Coach Inn, which looks good on the website. He also mentioned Quality Hotel & Suites, but some of the reviews mentioned bed bugs--eeeekkk! Any hotels or B & B's you would recommend?
We also would like a place to eat a dinner the night before the wedding and also a spot for lunch. It doesn't need to be super fancy but the dinner should feel special. Any recommendations? Thanks!

Hi - have you checked www.niagara-usa.com/ or www.vacationsmadeeasy.com/NiagaraFallsON/pointsOfInterest/ProspectPointParkNiagaraFallsNY.cfm? It looks like this Comfort Inn is near/in Prospect Point - http://www.comfortinn.com/hotel-niagara_falls-new_york-NY412.
I can't help with the restaurants - we stayed/ate on the Canadian side but take a look here... www.niagara-usa.com/niagara-falls-restaurants_3_restaurants.html#Falls Region
You might also consider eating on the Canadian side. There are so many choices - from casual to fine dining. Check here...

Hey Keyser - I don't think she's getting any responses. Probably just wanted to bring the post back to the top of the forum.

Thanks for your reply Donna in India. Those links are very helpful. The reason we can't dine on the Canadian side is that some of the wedding guests are foreign and won't have a Canadian visa.
Keyser, I accidentally wrote this on the Canada page yesterday and a poster suggested I write it on the NY page for better response.

I actually considered that reason but thought maybe it had to do with transportation. My husband is foreign and we had the same issues but went through the visa process. I hope it works out for you.

Travel Tips for Niagara Falls
History of the Goat Island
by Faiza-Ifrah
From the website:
http://www.answers.com/topic/goat-island
John Stedman – an early pioneer and miller – kept a herd of goats on the island. Upon returning to the island after the terrible winter of 1780, Stedman found all but one of the goats had died; thus giving the island its name.
The preservation of the island as parkland is due to the early efforts of Augustus Porter, who in the middle 19th century recognized the long-term value of the falls as a tourist attraction. Porter purchased the island and later allowed a group of Tuscarora Native Americans to live on the island and sell their crafts to the tourists who came to the falls by stagecoach and early railroads. In spite of pressure, Porter refused to tame the environment on the island. In 1817, he built a toll bridge to the island for tourists. It was swept away by ice, so another was built the following year downstream. Basil Hall called it "one of the most singular pieces of engineering in the world". Almost seven hundred feet long, it soon became the best-travelled walkway in the region.
In 1885 the island was included in the Niagara Reservation State Park which is the oldest state park in the U.S.
Sources: Pierre Berton: Niagara, A History of the Falls. It has to be exploring the park in light drizzle and the up and close and a very personal experience with falls and rapids.

This picture is at Niagara Falls with the Canadian side at the background. So this is taken from the American side ... both sides are beautiful but if you do not have much time, the best view you have from the Horshoe Falls at the Canadian side!!
Currance Exchanging
by tpangelinan
Currance exchange is really no big deal, you can stop by the Duty Free store, or on the Candain side just over the bridge is a currance exchange both. There really is not much of a need to do this unless you want to play with Canadian money because they except both at just about any where you go. There can be a down side to exchanging if you are American and bring it back home to your home state because your bank like mine may charge you to exchange it back. I made the mistake of forgetting to use it all up and brought back about $35.00 or so and my bank wants to charge me a $35.00 fee to exchange my $35.00 for a total of $70.00 which I fine just stupid! So now I have another souvener! Don't let this happen to you!

Free parking is rare. Many parking lots vary in prices from day to day and from month to month. The major parking lots are as follows:
Commercial Parking Lots Ontario Side:

Rapids View parking - Niagara Parks Commission - a fee is charged
Greenhouse parking - Niagara Parks Commission - a fee is charged
Kingsbridge Park parking - Niagara Parks Commission - free seasonal
Botanical Gardens parking - Niagara Parks Commission - free
Niagara Glen parking - Niagara Parks Commission - free

In many cases, parking on City of Niagara Falls streets at paid meters are cheaper than most commercial parking lots. Most commercial parking lots charge approximately $7 to $10 CAN. Many city owned and operated lots charge approximately $5 for 8 hours. The choices are endless and it is your choice. You will pay for convenience. Hotels/Motels provide free parking for patrons.
Many small privately owned lots are available throughout the tourist district. They are relatively small and charge a dollar or two less than the commercial lots however they are often located several blocks away from the primary commercial lots thus much more walking is involved getting to where you want to go.

Packing List
by stacyp
If you do the tour of the falls - you might want to bring an extra set of clothes along. YOU WILL GET WET!!!
Also - bring a nice pair of walking shoes - there is a lot to see and you will need to walk to see it. Bring a nice camera - there are many opportunities for photos. A panoramic camera would make some great shots of the falls - sometimes it was hard to get the entire falls in one shot. You may also want a waterproof camera for the boat ride into the falls.
You may also want to bring a special camera and/or film to take picutres of the falls at night (see my must see activities).
BRING A LOT OF FILM!!! There are places to buy film - but as any tourist area - they will charge you extra! I used up several rolls of film!
