My Hometown! Owego, New York
"My formative years"
Owego is a small town in upstate New York. It's located proximate to the city of Binghamton, NY. There is a SUNY school in Binghamton. Owego used to be an "IBM Boom Town" when my parents first moved there in the early 1980's, now IBM has largely pulled down, and it's my impression that the town has gone downhill a bit since. Owego has a lovely downtown area with some sweet little shops and some very nice parks. It is a historical area of upstate NY. Unfortunately, the town doesn't have much to recommend it beyond the downtown area. In June, Owego hosts the annual Strawberry Festival which is fun and the Tioga County Fair in late summer.
"Industry & Employment"
There is not a lot of employment opportunities in the area. I would hazard to guess that the prision, the school district, and Lockheed Martin would be the largest source of employment in the town itself. Aside from them, there are the various banks & such that are rather small. The town has been in decline since IBM pulled out in the 1990s and it seems to be struggling economically. This is my impression of many areas of upstate New York. It is located within close driving distance of Binghamton, Vestal, Johnson City, and Endicott which have substantially more employment opportunities, but they are by no means numerous compared to other areas of the country.
"Accomodations & Hotels"
It does have inexpensive accomodations if you are heading north to the Adirondacks and is only about 15 minutes by highway east of Binghamton. It is a very safe town for visitors. I would recommend staying at Angels in the Attic B&B or the Treadway for accomodations. The Treadway has AMAZING breakfast. The Treadway does also have very nice facilities for events. A friend of mine had her wedding there and it was quite pretty. Oddly enough, they boast the furthest inland lighthouse in the backyard. IMHO it is TACKY - but they like it.
