Pembroke was originally a community of the large area that was Batavia. As Pembroke grew so did its need for independence and in the 1800s it became a town of its own. Over the years, other communities have gravitated towards union with Pembroke.

Pembroke is a quiet town with both residential and rural areas right at exit 48 of the NYS Thruway (I-90) on route 5. 4500 people live in the town, with another thousand in the nearby communities that form the township.
Two small factories on the east end of town are dairy-related. One is Kutters Cheese Factory, known around the world for its cheese.
