The Rhinecliff: Boutique country hotel along the Hudson
I wanted to stay somewhere close to the river, but also wanted someplace that was more upscale and modern without losing its charm - that would be The Rhinecliff. It is a beautiful hotel, located right on the Hudson River. The rooms are spacious and charming with modern amenities. Comfortable beds, flat screen HD televisions, big bathtubs to soak in, showers with rainforest shower heads and a nice balcony over looking the river - that's what we liked about the hotel.
There is a bar / restaurant located in the hotel that serves up libations of every kind, plus delicious food for breakfast, lunch and dinner. They have a nice wine list too; and all at reasonable prices.
While some people are actually put off by the sound, there are railroad tracks that run between the building and the river with commuter trains and an occasional freight train that chug by. We found it rather nice to hear and watch them go by.
Unique Quality: The great views of the river were a big plus for us. We sat up on the balcony with a bottle of wine and watched the sunset. Quite romantic.
It is also very close to a train station. If you were traveling from NYC or from the north you could definitely take the train and walk the block to the hotel.

beekman arms: the oldest inn in america
the beekman arms is the oldest inn in constant operation in america. george washington was a guest at the beekman arms. a very nice inn to stay in. the rooms are modern and spacious. besure to visit the tavern at the beekman to get an idea of life in the late 1700's. the place to stay when visiting hyde park and rhinebeck.

Gables Bed and Breakfast: Gables were Great
The Gables in Rhinebeck was the perfect place to stay for my mother and I. Cindy, the owner is an amazing woman, who accomodated our every need and is a terrific chef to boot. The breakfasts here were the best I've ever had at a B&B. The house is impeccably clean, the rooms and grounds are wonderfully cared for. And I loved that all the guests came down to breakfast to visit, share experiences and compare notes on the area. I would highly recommend this to a first timer or a frequenter to the Hudson Valley.

B&B: Whistlewood farm B&B
I recently had an extended stay at Whistlewood Farm B&B, just outside of Rhinebeck, NY, a charming village in the Hudson Valley. Frankly, Whistlewood has spoiled me for my own home.
At Whistlewood the level of accommodation is superior, a five star lodging – an excellent mattress, high-count ironed 100% cotton sheets, ample fluffy towels, endless hot water for bathing in the whirlpool tubs and privacy. Depending on the room, there are fireplaces, whirlpools, double showers, and private patios.
Once you venture into the common areas of Whistlewood, the eye and hand of owner Maggie Myer is evident. The lounges are comfortable, filled with an antiques collectors’ treasure trove – the iron and nickel cook stove is jaw dropping. The feel is more upscale lodge than overwrought Victorian.
Guests tend to congregate in the solarium off the kitchen where breakfast is served. Maggie calls it a country breakfast, but that is too modest a description. The cooked foods are made to order – eggs, pancakes, waffles (the best). Not to be missed is the fresh made, fresh fruit salad. I crave it. If you’re lucky, Maggie’s friend Jay, a professional musician, will be strumming and singing for his breakfast. There is a groaning board known as the “Dessert Table” that is dressed for breakfast with yogurt, cottage cheese, bread, etc.. It also holds muffins, cakes, pies, cookies and assorted snack available around the clock.
The grounds of Whistlewood are immaculate and inviting. The gardens are lovely, with birds, bunnies, wild turkeys and deer making guest appearances. Surrounding the main house and cottage are horse pastures and a stable, housing Maggie’s horses.
Not to be forgotten are the two Queens of the property – Cherokee and Lulu, Maggie’s mother-daughter black Labs. They are up for walks on Whistlewood’s nature trails, a game of fetch, snacks, and occasionally serve as lawn ornaments…
Ten minutes off the Taconic Parkway, just beyond the upper fringes of metropolitan New York, Maggie and Whistlewood earn their kudos.

The Beekman Arms is a historic...
The Beekman Arms is a historic inn (I think Washington really did sleep here) in this funky little village that has several good restaurants and interesting shops (and also seems to be a New Age mini-mecca). We stayed in an annex of the inn that was a little foofy but comfy and tidy.
