Rochester to Buffalo

by iabsar

We are a party of 5 arriving at the Rochester Airport about 5 pm. What is the most cost-effective way to get to Buffalo the same evening?

Re: Rochester to Buffalo

greyhound (station located at the south end of Midtown Plaza) offers several scheduled runs to Buffalo from Rochester at $25 per person. the trip takes 1 hour and 30 minutes.
Hertz offers a comfortable ride in a Ford Taurus (fits five easily) for $74 per day and you can pick it up and drop it off at the ROC airport. Add in another $20 for gas.

You probably want the rental car because then you can cruise around Buffalo with your own wheels rather than have to depend on walking or taxis in the city.
5 people times $25 for bus is $125. 5 people in one car is $95.

Travel Tips for Rochester

To the Lilac Festival at Highland Park in May, and to the upper falls of the Genesee River. Don't miss Letchworth State Park, 40 miles south of Rochester. The Grand Canyon of the East! The varied terrain and foliage!

Sector 9

by davecallahan

The city of Rochester is delineated into 10 individual political/social units called sectors.

The Zipcode 14621 is essentially Sector 9 in Rochester. Sectors 9 and 10 are the areas where many of the cities murders occur and where the largest city decay is seen. The sector is what is commonly refered to as a "diverse" neighborhood, with strong Hispanic and African American influence. Light industry sits in among vast stretches of rental properties and abandoned houses. Specialty shops (ethnic foods and clothing) and tatoo parlors are frequently seen along the main arteries.
During the day the landscape is bleak but at night it is definitely dangerous. This is not an area where tourists should roam without a local guide.

The boundaries of Sector 9 are: Genesee River, Goodman Street, route 104, Clifford Avenue.

During my youth, this sector was a strong Italian and German area which has gradually been changing to the present situation. It has always been a rough area of the city.

I don't know where else you can get white hot dogs (porkers). Red hot dogs are known as 'Texas hots.' (I have absolutely no idea why.) Also, many of the surrounding town names are pronounced differently than they would be anywhere else in the US. (Chili is pronounced with two long i's, Charlotte is pronounced 'Sha-lotte' with the accent on the second syllable. These are only two of many...)

Art Walk Live

by davecallahan

The third weekend in July or September in Rochester marks the date for the Art Walk. University Avenue from the Memorial Art Gallery to the Eastman House is cordoned off for a street-of-art.

From noon to 4pm, this area is swinging with live entertainment, tents of artwork, raffles (tickets at the Art Gallery), food/beverage vendors, balloons for the kids and lots of people milling around. A short parade starts off the event and there are fire trucks to inspect. There are art works to buy from $25 to hundreds of dollars. The kids can have fun adding their own images to the collage. Artists take every day items and decorate them as art work on the streets for the event.

Parking for the event is in the Art Gallery and along the side streets, so get there early or be prepared to park away from the event.
Profits go to the Granger Homestead.

Rochester Red Wings

by davecallahan

Summer in Rochester requires a visit to the Frontier Field to see the Red Wings play nine innings.

The Red Wings play in the International League as the Triple-A affiliate of the Major League Minnesota Twins. They used to be associated with the St. Louis Cardinals then the Baltimore Orioles when the games were played at the now-defunct Silver Stadium (Red Wing Stadium). The club is publicly owned and is operated by Rochester Community Baseball.

The new stadium is large and the seating is well-designed. There are restroom facilities on each tier. Food vendors are under and behind each tier and there are picnic areas out behind the first tier for group gatherings.

Parking is in the old Kodak parking lots across the street from the stadium.
Signage to get the stadium is in need of much repair and some of the signs can no longer be read but just show as a faint brown blur by the roadside. Use the map attached to this tip to help you navigate.
