Travel Tips for Saranac Lake
Climb Mt. Baker on the Moody...
by Nadeine
Climb Mt. Baker on the Moody Pond road in Saranac Lake...very easy trails to follow, you'll be amazed by the beautiful scenary when you reach the top. My fondest memory is walking in the pitch black and knowing where I am going and not being afraid of whose around the corner. (except of course the boogy man),then getting a custard at the Mt. Mist on Lake Flower, yum. (by the way it's a sort of ice cream cone)
Saranac Inn Golf
by davecallahan
This is a nicely manicured course that opens from June to October. The fairways are mostly wide open with a few young trees planted for decoration. The course is very hilly and provides a great deal of exercise for those who do not have a cart.
from the ads:
" The course was designed using the natural terrain to provide a wonderful golfing experience, with spectacular mountain views, pure mountain air and a memorable fragrance emanating form the balsams that line the course. Fully irrigated with bent grass greens, the course has a reputation as one of most carefully maintained and challenging resort courses in the Northeast."
It is 6000 yards from the short tees and 6800 on the long tees. Because of the hills, it plays like a much longer course and takes a good three hours to complete. Water is a hazard specifically on three holes and peripherally on two others. Some tees and greens are elevated to make club selection a bit tricky.
Even on the short tees it is a pretty difficult course for differs like my. The better than average player (like my friend Don) who hit fairly straight and where they aim will manage the course well. Power, unless it is controlled, will only get you into trouble with the long rough and undergrowth.
Greens fees are pretty stiff: $65 for 18holes with cart (which I suggest you use).
There is a small driving range and a pro shop on the premises. There is a nice pro shop where you can buy balls and tees and talk to someone about the course. The management requires decent attire (No tee shirts, tank tops or fishnet shirts, nor jeans or brief shorts.)
Fall Into the Gulch
by ExGuyParis
Way off the beaten path... I can't even remember where. Close to Keene, I believe. This spot, called "The Gulch," was a favorite of mine. A chilly, whirling pool of water, a cliff that gave perfect access from above, and a large dose of courage (and/or a youthful sense of indestructibility), added up to a thrilling experience. Here, Henry begins the journey.
On my next journey back to the Adirondacks, I'll try to revisit The Gulch and determine if I still have the courage for such madness!

1998 all america city! don't let "city" deceive you. We are a town of about 5500 and surrounded by the beautiful Adirondacks!! Hiking, camping, skiing, boating, swimming, We have it all! Saranac Lake is known for it's friendliness, esp. the "downtown" store owners, who go the extra distance for their customers. We have lived here since 1988 and will remain here!
