Travel Tips for Saratoga Springs

Adirondack Art for a Cause

by kazander

The Gateway Gallery is north of Saratoga Springs just up Rt 9N just in the Adirondack Mountain area. All the unique artwork inside, furniture, paintings, wood carvings, ect..., are donated by local artists and the proceeds go to the owner's charity foundation, McArthur Park. The charity is for families who have a parent with a terminal illness.
The work inside is really incredible! Beautiful pieces, I wish I could have bought everything.
The owner will chat you up during your shopping experience. He''l take you on a tour of "the paper museum" it involves a 2 story outhouse....( I'll leave the rest as a surprise for your visit.) And tell you all about the pieces in the gallery as well as his charity.

Horses, History, Health and Great Performances

by KittyLou

I live just about 2 hours from Saratoga so attending the NYC Ballet during July and the Philadelphia Orchestra in August (which is also racing season) can be done as a day trip. Staying over can be a treat as there are plenty of good places to have dinner. It is affordable in July. Come August staying in Albany is less pricey, although still not cheap.

The town's sidewalks have a number of horse scultpures. As we are often traveling just in time for SPAC performances then heading right home I have found the best way to get some photos for this page is just to point and click while my husband drives along. Not going to win any awards for photos this way but some are not as bad as they might be. And it is one way to enjoy traffic tie ups.

doolemma's Saratoga Springs

A TRIPLE DEAD HEAT

For about eight years in the late 70's and early 80's we lived in this beautiful town (often called "the city in the country"). We were back a few years ago (1999) and the town has really changed. Many new hotels, B&B's, restuartants, etc. have been added and a many of the places and sights that we were familiar with have changed or disappeared. I guess thats called progress.

Saratoga Springs is a resort for all seasons, not just the month of August each year when they have the cream of throughbred racing at the oldest track in the United States. Saratoga (most people drop the Springs) flourished as a place of rejuvenation at its Bath Houses and to drink from the health-giving springs. One of which tasted like rotten eggs to me. The Lincoln Baths and the Crystal Spa are still open today.

The movie "Saratoga Trunk" was filmed here and that represented the flamboyant days of Diamond Jim Brady and Lillian Russell. The Canfield Casino is now the home of the Historical Society but it rivaled Monte Carlo in its day. Many of the gambling devices of that time are on display.

This is a town that should be visited if at all possible. Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC) is the summer home of the New York City Ballet, The Philadelphia Orchestra, the Lake George Opera Company, and many top named stars. Yaddo a retreat for artist that are in residence to complete their works, Skidmore College now up off North Brodway in a new campus, vacanting most of the huge mansions on Union Ave.that have now been turned into B&B's,Cafe Lena, oldest continuousy operating coffee house in the US where the famous and the undiscovered still share the stage.

The town has been named "One of America's Most Walkable Cities". But it has plenty to see on the outskirts. The State Park with a beautiful golf course, the Saratoga Battlefield, Grant's summer home, and just a few miles away is the birthplace of the US Navy, in Whitehall.
