More about 1889 WhiteGate Inn

Great place!

by TripAdvisor Member SRBrook

The Walt Whitman Suite was exquisite! The hosts were very friendly and attentive. Breakfast with the other guests and staff was a great way to get started in the morning. We loved our stay there - wish it could have been longer!

Our Wedding (in their beautiful gardens)

by TripAdvisor Member moreNewlyweds

The Inn and the staff exceeded all expectatioins. From the moment we arrived Frank was attending to every detail that we didn't think about; diner reservations at exclusive restaurants, limo service, local tickets, etc.

The 3 course breakfasts were 5 star, (and we saved on lunch expense - we skipped it after these breakfasts).

We were married in the beautiful gardens that Ralph has worked his magic on, and are so excited to have such a fabulous background to our wedding pictures.

We have visited a number of B&B's and the WhiteGate Inn is far and away the best experience we have had at any of them. We will return, and I would recomend them to any of my friends and family.

I'll be back

We spent a most excellent week at the Whitegate. Breakie was without peer. The garden holds a surprise with each walk through. The Robert Frost room and Ms. B were a delight each and together. The on-call massage was the icing on the cake. I have nothing but good to say about this place and the people who make it what it is.

Hospitality incredible

by TripAdvisor Member smjorl

A trip back in time with all the modern conviences. We have stayed in three different rooms, each had its own special theme and feeling. Hard to pick our favorite. The rooms are immaculate and tastefully decorated. Comfort to the max.
The candlelight breakfast with three courses served in pampered style without the stuffiness. Presentation and taste are a welcome change from the bland.
The staff is accommodating, sincere, caring, and most of all friendly and welcoming. One must spend time in the incredible garden with water garden that is "over the top"
This place is first class all the way but as a warning to all......
you will go back...this place is just great

Lovely Cottage

by TripAdvisor Member vkmk

The cottage was lovely and private, which helped us, feel more at ease traveling with our poodle. It was convenient for dog walks and knowing that we were not disturbing other guests. The owner's were very gracious in allowing our dog to stay with us in the cottage. We enjoyed the advantage of a small kitchen and a fireplace. The cottage was decorated comfortably; it was very welcoming. (Loved the sofa) The only negative comment was housekeeping for the cottage. The housekeeper seldom replenished towels that were on the floor and once even left the dirty towels on the dining room table. We would also recommend accepting the breakfast and not having the refrigerator stock since it was only stocked once during our stay. Minor comments when compared to the list of amenities this bed and breakfast offers.

Wonderful stay at the Walt Whitman

by TripAdvisor Member LittleMissMuffett

Our 3 night stay at the lovely 1889 Whitegate Inn and Cottage was outstanding!!! We planned our stay to celebrate our 20th Wedding Anniversary. We chose this Inn because our son became engaged at this Inn in June. We felt it was an appropriate choice. Our accomodation was in the Walt Whitman Suite..beautifully decorated...clean...private...warm and inviting.
Love the fireplace that faced the bedroom and the bathroom.
All of the amenities were in place. We enjoyed so very much the three course seated breakfast in the diningroom with beautiful music wafting from the livingroom on the player piano...our hosts Steve, Ralph, and Frank were very cordial and interesting to talk with regarding their Inn careers...such dedicated and effective innkeepers. Go in the summer to see the beautiful gardens in full bloom!!! Edward and Sandra Williams

Truly Exquisite!

by TripAdvisor Member CBrandt

Don't even consider any other place. Wake in incredible ambiance to start your day with amazing gourmet cuisine and conversation. The thoughtful care of every detail put us at ease after a long trip down
from NYC. Hosts Frank, Ralph and Steve accomplish the perfect balance
of providing personal attention while also leaving us be. We can't say enough positive things about the Whitegate! The rooms are stunning (especially the Garden Suite. WOW!!) Simply awesome. Don't hesistate or wait... By the way, this inn is indeed within short walking distance (5 minutes tops) to downtown Asheville and easy to find.

Keeps getting better

This was our third stay at the inn. Each time they've taken their standards to a higher level. The beauty of the gardens and the comfort of the rooms cannot be over stated. The food is outstanding--a three course breakfast and different every day of your stay. Frank,
Ralph and Steve are perfect hosts. They are entertaining, patient, attentive, accomodating . . . . They made sure to set us up for our day with recommendations on what to do and how to get there. During the evening wine social they made sure that we found the best restaurants and helped make reservations when necessary. This was our third stay, but won't be our last!

Good, but not great

by TripAdvisor Member AtlantaTravelingirl

The property is beautiful - from the gardens to the common rooms to the sleeping rooms.

The room comfort is "ok". The room was terribly hot and the one window air conditioner didn't cool off the room very well. The sleeping room could have used a ceiling fan like the porch.

The breakfasts were "ok". I was terribly disappointed. The fruit cocktail starter was not fresh...think it was frozen fruit. Could have used a topping of some sort. Like to have a choice re: juice....I hate orange juice!. I was very surprised that there were no breakfast breads to accompany either the fruit starter or the entree. While the entree for both days' breakfasts was upscale, it was more of a brunch entree and not a breakfast entree. I was shocked that there was not an offering of a breakfast meat to accompany the eithe the soufle or the b'fast casserole. I also think the breakfast dessert of chocolate cake is a little much.

The social hour was nice. The appetizer was "ok" as well. I thought the decanter of amaretto was a nice touch. The Flavia coffee machine is a little finicky and the choices a little limiting.

While the Inn was very clean, I was very concerned to see and hear the innkeeper's dogs in the kitchen during breakfast service!
