Asheville and crime

by geargeezer

Hi I'm thinking of moving to Asheville. I like it there but I checked the crime stats and they are so high. Whats going on in that little town? The crime rate is way above the national avarage.

RE: Asheville and crime

by fl2nc2fl

i am not exactly sure why the crime rate is so high here, but it is. the muder rate and rape rate are just as high here as anywhere in the country with the same population. there are lots of drug problems here as well... meth and crack to name a couple. that contributes to the problem.

Travel Tips for Asheville

Art Deco in Asheville

by matcrazy1

Asheville offers a lot of Art Deco architecture to see and explore. Four Art Deco masterpieces were designed by North Carolinian famous architect Douglas D. Ellington in 1920' and they all survived in original shape in downtown Asheville:
1. First Baptist Church
2. Asheville City Building
3. S&W Cafeteria
4. Asheville High School
Details in my Things To Do and Off The Beaten Path tips.
But strolling around downtown I also discovered less known Art Deco structures with some pretty or ugly (judge by yourself) but for sure interesting details. Look at my pictures.

Art Deco was a popular design movement from 1910 until 1939. This purely decorative design movement fixed together many different styles and movements of the early 20th century, including Constructionism, Modernism, Cubism, Bauhaus, Art Nouveau, and Futurism. The best known example of Art Deco art in architecture is probably spire of the Chrysler Building in New York City, built 1928–1930. Sooner or later I have to reach that spire personally :-).

Music scene

by matcrazy1

Asheville is famous for its lively music scene and compared to New Orleans, Nashville or Memphis in travel literature. Well, there are musicians who come to Asheville mainly from the North in search for career and job. But the three previously mentioned cities offer more for fans of live music, I think.

I saw a few bands or just couples with their instruments strolling around downtown and I could hear two guys playing on accordions and singing. Although I am a dedicated fan of saxophone not accordion these guys played interesting and lively folk music.

One more thing. I asked at the Mountaineer Inn where I stayed what are the most famous bands or musicians based in Asheville. The guy didn't know any except the heavy metal (not my favourite music style) Sanctity band and the Mad Tea Party (indie-folk). But the one medium-age visitor recommended me to listen to CDs of David LaMotte (folk music, acoustic guitar) who lived close to Asheville and used to play in downtown bars or Chuck Brodsky (humorous and political lyrics). I noticed all above names but then forgot to buy any CD of LaMotte or Chuck Brodsky in Asheville :-(. If I had more time I'd try to find and hear them live.

Need some high adventure?

There are lots of places to go white water rafting in the greater Asheville area. You can stop at the tourist office in downtown or just up the parkway from downtown and get all the information you need to hit the rapids.

Lake Lure - pure beauty!

by matcrazy1

Lake Lure was a filming location for scenes from the movies Dirty Dancing (1987). Do you remember that famous musical and romance film starring Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey? It's a little, mountainous town and old (as for the USA - 1927) spa located along the very beautiful lake with deep green waters, sandy beaches around, rocky and covered by forest mountains up around. National Geographic has called Lake Lure one of the most beautiful man-made lakes in the world and they are right!

There is Lake Lure Pavilion on a lake peninsula. It's a wooden, pretty located building that people rent for various meetings, reunions etc. It offers a beautiful view of Chimney Rock Mountains, the beachfront, and the marina. Town of Lure is only a short drive (some 3-4 miles) from Chimney Rock and only 28 miles southeast of Asheville.

cuban cuisine

by doug48 about havanna

the havana restaurant is a great place to have lunch in downtown asheville. they serve very good cuban cuisine at moderate prices. on my recent visit to asheville i had their cuban sandwich which was just as good as ones i have ordered in miami and tampa. a nice inexpensive place to eat in downtown asheville.
