trekking the quiet streets...
by americanwildchild
Summer in Asheville is like hanging out in a subtropic jungle at times. That is, if you live out of downtown. Bamboo thrives here and walking along some of the side streets in the Montford area (historic district north of downtown), I sometimes think I could be in a temperate part of Malysia or China.
a free publication...

Every Wednesday a new edition of a free local paper is put out on virtually every street corner. This is the Mountain Express. It features articles about gardening, food, music, arts, theater, movies, world and national and local issues, classifieds, and has a great horoscope. This is the publication I refer tourists to when I'm working, as it lists most clubs and restaurants and their ongoings. (Otherwise I get weeded while waiting tables repeating directions over and over again!!) It gives a traveller a good idea of what this town is like and what we do here.

For walking around Asheville, small, city backpack and surely bag for your camera - both better water-proof except in dry summer. Always comfortable walking shoes or boots depends on season and your activity. Sun-glasses especially in winter and summer and a rain coat, eventually less comfortable umbrella from fall to spring.

Biltmore Estate dining
by Travelsteph about Stable Cafe at the Biltmore Estate
I thought the food and atmosphere were both great. The restarant is located in a 19th Century barn that has been refurbished. The guests dine in renovated horse stalls which only enhances the atmosphere. I had the oak smoked chicken breast which was absolutely delicious.
