Traveling alone to Asheville?

by JennLynd

Suggestions for where to stay & things to do (besides Biltmore of course!) in Asheville for a female traveling alone?
I'd love to stay at smaller inn or B&B, but am on an extreme budget! Safety is MAJOR factor.

Are there any cute country festivals/ fairs during summertime?

Trying to go for a little retreat & alone time.

Depends on what you like...
The biggest festival in Asheville is the Belle Chere which is on the last weekend of July (Think Mardi Gras in the Mountains) http://www.belecherefestival.com/
If arts & crafts are more your speed check out the Folk Arts Center on the Blue Ridge Parkway
http://www.southernhighlandguild.org/
For shopping, you'll probably enjoy the Grove Park Arcade downtown.
http://www.grovearcade.com/
And if hiking and doing the "nature thing" is what you're after, I'd reccommend the Arboretum and Mt. Pisgah (both accesible from the BRP Southbound)

Can't help with the B&B (I stay with family) but I can tell you the Biltmore village area is a very visable and safe area with lots of Inns and B&Bs. Asheville isn't a very dangerous city as long as you use common sense and good judgement.

Enjoy your trip!

I would suggest that you also check on some of the smaller towns very close to Asheville. Going south, there is Skyland, Arden, Fletcher, and Hendersonville and all are very nice small towns within 30 minutes of Asheville. Not sure what you are looking for but if mostly "rest" then I would definitely suggest one of the smaller towns. The other towns offer very little if any nightlife etc. You would need to go to Asheville Or Greenville, SC which is aprox 45 minutes from Hendersonville. Hendersonville has the "Apple Festival" Sept 1-4 where many vendors set up their Arts & Crafts on Main Street and there is entertainment etc. In Hendersonville, you will find many antique & quaint shops if that is an interest.I think you mentioned a budget- please keep in minds the city Parks. (Fletcher has a new, wonderful Park with a nice stream), that one could enjoy a great book. I can't give info on B&B's , having not stayed in any , but there are some, so please check "lodgings" on the net in those towns. I think you will be pleased with the friendleness of the people in any of these areas and they will gladly give you info. Enjoy your visit!

I forgot in the last post- that also in Fletcher the first week of September is the NC State Fair.

Travel Tips for Asheville

not too many shakes

by richiecdisc

The band was quite good with a female harpist, a few fiddlers, and a guitarist. The traditional music fit the scene well with lots of families with kids like at a playground but managing to be non-obtrusive just the same. It was very much like what I’ve experienced in the UK where families are encouraged to bring their kids to the pubs especially on Sunday afternoons. One great plus here was the non-smoking environment in the whole pub. We enjoyed the music and atmosphere very much and since we were still hungry we split a meal of meat pies. I had a couple more beers and we had to pry ourselves away since we still had a small drive ahead of us.

As we pulled away from Ashville we wondered if we’d done the right thing. We’d found a great place, not just a brewery but one with character and it would have been too easy to stay overnight and enjoy it longer. But we had a big hike planned the next day and our overnight destination would bring us closer to that for an earlier start. This was, after all, a trip to the mountains more than anything else. We’d surely feel a lot better the next day with a few less beers and a bit more sleep. Beer was a spice to the main course and sometimes a little pepper is better than too many shakes.

Freedom of speech

If you doubt Asheville is Berkeley, California's eastern branch office, you should have been at the anti-war protest. There were also people marching to support the troops and Asheville's finest on hand to keep both sides at arm's length. I tried to politely engage this particular group of people and all I got, basically, was the middle finger.

Packing List

by cad_fred

What every you usually travel with will work for Asheville. Asheville is a very relaxed town so plan on dressing comfortably, especially for all of the great and interesting stores to explore downtown. The on reason to dress up is if your planning on dining at on of the finer restaurants downtown, and even then is usually not required.
Ashville while in the South is still up in elevation and is known it get very chilly a night even in the dog days of summer where a daytime high is in the nineties. Most anything you might need would be available in Ashville. It has the two major regional hospitals (across the street from one another). Lots of film and your polarizer lenses, enhancing lenses if your there for the fall color. Hiking shoes and a water pack of some kind. There are a lot of beautiful trails off the Blue Ridge Parkway.

A few trees of exceptional beauty!

by matcrazy1

During my long visit to numerous attractions of the huge Biltmore Estate I found a few unbelievable beautiful trees off the beaten path.

They were unique, at least for me, as we don't have them in Poland or Europe or I have never seen them. Add some trees in wonderful fall colours and some beautiful and hidden flowers/fruits in the Biltmore Gardens. I think they should add an exposition on trees and forests of the estate with pictures and information on various tree specious. Some trees looked georgeus in fall colours.

Everything is good!

Excellent vegetarian fare...even my carnivore husband admitted the food was good (that's a pretty tough feat to accomplish!) Dishes are prepared with local organic produce. I eat there each visit and have never been disappointed. Well established restaurant with locals and tourists.
