Blue Ridge Parkway- Nature's Way!
by NC_Ziggy
I'm very fortunate for living less than an hour's drive away from the slow, leisurely drive afforded along this pristeen skyline. I'm very stupid that I don't take greater advantage of it! The Blue Ridge Parkway construction began in the 1930's as a means of providing employment for the many displaced workers during the Depression years and with the continuing recent work in past decade or so has been more or less completed. The last major part of construction was the building of the Linn Cove Viaduct viewed in the first picture.
If you're in the area, take an hour to drive a short way or a day to travel and enjoy... it's your choice and either way, you'll be glad you did! There is just a different sense to be discovered here in the mountains. There's a completely different and cleansing fragrance associated with the flora, the streams, the coolness and the sensation of being so close to nature! In the summer when it's in the 90's here, just an hour away it is 10 to 15 degrees cooler. In the winter there is snow there when no snow appears here. In the fall & spring... well, are there any better times for enjoying the mountains?

I think the best thing to do now is let the pictures speak for themselves. I will only add that I personally named this first picture "Elephant Mountain." It's not known as that... in fact, I'm not sure if this particular area has a name but it sure takes the look of an elephant so who knows? Maybe I've named a new place! Probably not. Do you see the elephant?
Memorial Park

You have had a busy couple of days in Blowing Rock, visiting and sightseeing and now its time for a quick break from vacationing. Visit Memorial Park where you can have yourself a picnic lunch (maybe pizza from the local constabulary) and layout a blanket on the ground and lay back and relax. You might even catch an impromptu bit of musical entertainment from locals playing at the park gazebo. There are ball fields and playgrounds for the kids to get out some of their pent up energy while you get some much needed down-time.
to get there:
on Park Avenue right off route 321

The permanent population is under 2000 but that swells to several times that size when the tourists and vacation-home people visit the area in the summer. 98% of the permanent population is caucasian with north european ancestry.

"Lovely View"
Blowing Rock has the attraction, "Blowing Rock" that sounds pretty hokey to me. I didn't go to it. I pretty much drove through Blowing Rock admiring its beauty getting to the Blue Ridge Parkway... but on the way home, we stopped for dinner at the Canyons of Blue Ridge Restaurant. See my tip. I think Blowing Rock's redeeming quality is its view and access to nature. Can't say much about the #1 primary attraction, "Blowing Rock."
Visit Blowing Rock... certainly go to Canyons!
