Art in the Park
by davecallahan
The summertime brings arts and crafts festivals one Saturday every month from May through October. This year (2007) is the 45th anniversary and the dates are 19MAY, 16JUN, 21JUL, 18AUG, 8SEP, 6OCT. The festival is open from 10am to 6pm on each of those days, rain or shine.
(for dates in the current year, just call the phone number listed below).
The tents are set up and the merchandise is for sale and some of it is entered in the juried selection. You can purchase for the vendors and watch the judging process to see which artisan gets the gold in the various arts/crafts classifications: painting, etching, stained and blown glass, basketry, wood carving and turning, clay, photography, fiber, jewelry.
Over 100 craftspersons will have their works on sale in a flea-market environment.
The Memorial Park is nearby so parents can drop their older kids off over there to play on the playground while the parents spend a little time shopping.
to get there:

333 Wallingford Street, one block west of route 321 and one block south of route US221
BLOWING ROCK NORTH CAROLINA

"BLOWING ROCK NC"
High in the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina BLOWING ROCK has been a destination for travellers seeking a place to rest and rejuvenate since the 1800's. Just off the Blue Ridge Parkway, the village offers an array of shops, restaurants and lodging.
Hans and I certainly enjoyed our afternoon in this charming village. As it was a warm and sunny Saturday afternoon in October, people were out in droves, just walking around and even doing some Christmas shopping.
Blowing Rock, NC

"beautiful drive"
Blowing Rock is a small town on a mountain. Apparently there is a rock here where legend has it two Native AMerican's from opposite tribes fell in love and threw themselves of a cliff..or some garbage like that.
We didn't go for a rock, we went for a winding drive on a mountain road with fantastic views.
Appalachian Mountains/Blue Ridge Parkway

"A Scenic Panorama & A Cool Drive!"
In all truthfulness, I set out to create a few pages about the Blue Ridge Parkway stretching over 300 miles through Virginia and North Carolina but alas there was no Blue Ridge Parkway location... tsk, tsk, hint, hint! The Blue Ridge Parkway traverses through the Blue Ridge Mountains (Duh!) which form a part of the Appalachian Mountains. This larger range begins in Georgia and extends to New York... hence the better known Appalachian Trail. This is just one small part. I hope you will see something of interest.
"Splendid Views"
It's hard to drive and enjoy the beauty in safety! Luckily, there are many places for formal parking and viewing. Better still, it is common to be able to simply pull off the highway and walk a short way for that beautiful photo op that you just have to have!
"Somebody Tell Me... How do trees grow in rock?"
Being a half-a$$ed farmer, it intrigues me how trees can grow in what is obviously centuries old rock formations... But I guess they can and it makes for a nice photo, huh? Come along on my Saturday afternoon trip and I'll show you more!
