Smoky Mountains National Park- Deep Creek
The Great Smoky Mountains is the most visited national park in the US. Translation: it's crowded.
Deep Creek is certainly not uncrowded, but it is a lesser known access point to the park, probably because you can't get very far into the park with a car. In fact, you enter the park, and you hit the parking lot less than a mile later.
I have been to Deep Creek many times. While I don't have a desire to go back in the immediate future, I can recommend it as a good place to take the family. You will certainly be in good company. There are many, many children here. That's mainly because the creek is well-known for its tubing.
Deep Creek is only about a mile or two from the town of Bryson City. Unlike Gatlinburg and Cherokee, Bryson City is not a tacky tourist town. Thus, in my opinion, it's a much more appealing base for visiting the region. And once you get past the tacky areas, the Smoky Mountains are actually quite beautiful.
